Northrop Grumman Space Sector is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer / Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to support our Structures Design, Analysis and Integration (SDAI) department (within Western Region Engineering) in support of the Launch Vehicles Business Unit. This role can be based out of Redondo Beach or Azusa, California.
Responsibilities
- Work within the Northrop Grumman Design group and will be responsible for creating drawing/design packages with proper content and ensuring compliance with applicable industry and military standards
- Review designs for fit, function, manufacturability, economy of fabrication, and verifying completed work, checking dimensions, materials, and quantities to be used
- Review of tolerance analysis, hardware selection, and fitment on assembly prints
- Resolve drawing-interpretation issues as they arise
- Verify 3D models submitted to manufacturing using Siemens NX 1946, managed with Teamcenter
- Serve as a liaison among various engineering disciplines, including Manufacturing and Quality
- Model fully defined components and assemblies efficiently in Siemens NX 1946 (Teamcenter), and produce/revise parametric drawings in conformance with ASME modeling and drawing standards
- Utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and NX 1946 as required
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Perform work quickly and accurately under schedule pressure while demonstrating patience
- Exhibit strong time management and organizational skills
Requirements
This requisition may be filled at either a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer level or a Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer level based on the qualifications listed below.
Basic Qualifications – Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Level 3)
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) discipline with 5+ years of related engineering design experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 3+ years of related engineering design experience, OR a Ph.D. in STEM with 1+ years of related engineering design experience.
- Must currently have an active DoD Secret security clearance at time of application
- Demonstrated experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Working knowledge of standard manufacturing processes including CNC Mill and Lathe operations
- Proficiency in Siemens NX 1946 and Teamcenter
Basic Qualifications – Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Level 4)
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) discipline with 8+ years of related engineering design experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 6+ years of related engineering design experience, OR a Ph.D. in STEM with 4+ years of related engineering design experience.
- Must currently have an active DoD Secret security clearance at time of application
- Demonstrated experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Working knowledge of standard manufacturing processes including CNC Mill and Lathe operations
- Proficiency in Siemens NX 1946 and Teamcenter
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) CAD modeling in manufacturing environment
- ASME Y14.5-2009
- Experience working with DoD programs
- Working knowledge of ASME Y14.100 and Mil-Standard 100
- Experienced with weld design per AWS D17.1 and D1.1

Compensation and Benefits
- Primary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00
- The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
- Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
- In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
