Role Overview
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will act as the technical expert for mechanical engineering within Primero. You will be responsible for leading and reviewing complex mechanical calculations, specifications, datasheets, equipment lists (MEL), and vendor evaluations. This role provides advanced technical expertise and support across mechanical design, analysis, equipment selection, operation, and project execution as required. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will ensure the quality and consistency of all mechanical deliverables for ongoing studies and detailed engineering work, while mentoring and guiding the team. Depending on the project, this person may also act as Lead Mechanical Engineer or Area Manager on specific mining projects. This position reports to the Discipline Lead – Mechanical Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the technical expert for mechanical engineering across Primero Americas projects, ensuring designs meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
- Remain hands-on in design and engineering: perform and check detailed calculations, prepare and review datasheets, specifications, reports, and drawings.
- Lead complex mechanical engineering deliverables for major equipment and systems (e.g., crushers, mills, conveyors, HVAC, piping, etc.).
- Take ownership of equipment packages: develop specifications, evaluate vendor bids, manage technical queries, and coordinate with suppliers and clients.
- Provide technical mentorship to engineers and designers, while still directly producing deliverables as part of the team.
- Support drafting and 3D modelling by guiding designers, while also contributing to CAD/model reviews where needed.
- Standardize and improve engineering methods, tools, and templates to build best practices within the mechanical discipline.
- Provide advanced procurement support: ensure vendor equipment meets technical and contractual requirements, and advise on risk mitigation.
- Stay actively involved in construction, installation, and commissioning, solving technical issues on-site and providing hands-on support when needed.
- Represent Primero as a subject matter expert in client interactions, technical meetings, and industry discussions, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted technical partner.

- 12+ years of experience in mechanical design for mining and mineral processing EPC/EPCM projects, with demonstrated progression to senior/principal level.
- Strong technical background in design, specification, and selection of major mechanical equipment (e.g., crushers, mills, conveyors, pumps, piping, HVAC, etc.)
- Proven ability to deliver feasibility studies, detailed design, and execution support.
