Project Accountant

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

• Set up and maintain project accounts, budgets, and cost codes in the accounting system
• Track project costs, including labor, materials, subcontractors, and overhead
• Monitor budgets vs. actuals and provide regular financial updates to project teams
• Prepare and submit client billings, including progress billing and time-and-material invoices
• Manage change orders and ensure proper financial documentation and billing
• Maintain and analyze Work in Progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognition
• Track and manage retainage, ensuring proper recording and release
• Reconcile project accounts and investigate discrepancies
• Collaborate with project managers to forecast costs and identify financial risks
• Support month-end and year-end close processes related to project financials
• Ensure compliance with contracts, company policies, and accounting standards (GAAP)
• Assist with audits by preparing project-related financial documentation

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or project-based environments
• Strong understanding of job costing and project accounting principles
• Experience with WIP reporting and percentage-of-completion accounting preferred
• Proficiency in accounting/ERP systems (e.g., Sage 100/300, Viewpoint, Foundation, or similar)
• Advanced Excel skills (data analysis, pivot tables, formulas)
• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
