JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an experienced lexicographer to lead and manage the completion of a bilingual isiXhosa–English dictionary. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ professional experience in lexicography, with demonstrated expertise in dictionary planning, compilation, and editing. A strong grounding in lexicographic theory and practice is essential, including experience with bilingual dictionary structures, corpus development, lemma selection, definition writing, and sense disambiguation.
The Project Manager/Lexicographer will oversee the editorial workflow, manage timelines, coordinate contributors, and ensure that highest scholarly and practical standards are met. The role requires familiarity with lexicographic software tools (e.g., TshwaneLex, TLex Suite, or similar), corpus-based methodologies, and best practices in terminology development. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS • Excerpt from corpus and edit dictionary entries, ensuring accuracy and relevance • Excellent writing and communication skills • Applied experience in lexicographic or terminographic work • Working with linguists, editors, and other stakeholders MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • At least 5 years’ proven experience in lexicography, preferably bilingual dictionary projects. • Postgraduate qualification (MA/PhD) in Lexicography, African Languages, Applied Linguistics, or related fields. • Demonstrated experience with dictionary compilation and terminology management. • Strong command of isiXhosa and English, both spoken and written. • Familiarity with lexicographic software and corpus tools. • Excellent organizational, editorial, and project management skills. • Experience in terminology development for African languages in specialized fields. • Publication record or contributions to previous dictionary/terminology projects • Understanding of lexicographic needs in educational and professional contexts.
