About the role
Our client is a leading force in the global mining industry, and we are seeking a highly accomplished Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our fully remote technical team. This position offers the unique opportunity to contribute to major mining projects worldwide without the need for relocation. You will be responsible for providing expert geotechnical advice, conducting advanced site investigations, and developing robust design solutions for mine infrastructure and operations. The ideal candidate is a recognized authority in geotechnical engineering with extensive experience in open-pit and underground mining environments.
Responsibilities: Provide senior-level geotechnical expertise and consulting services for various mining projects, including feasibility studies, design, construction, and operational support. Lead and manage complex geotechnical investigations, including planning, execution, and interpretation of site characterization data (e.g., soil mechanics, rock mechanics, hydrogeology). Develop detailed geotechnical designs for mine slopes, tailings storage facilities, waste dumps, and underground excavations. Perform advanced numerical modeling and stability analyses to assess risks and optimize designs. Develop and implement ground support strategies and monitoring programs for underground mining operations. Review and approve geotechnical reports, designs, and construction quality control plans prepared by other engineers and consultants. Ensure compliance with relevant geotechnical engineering standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements within the mining sector. Mentor and guide junior geotechnical engineers and provide technical leadership to project teams. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mining engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, and structural engineers. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in geotechnical engineering technologies, software, and mining methodologies. Contribute to the development of company-wide geotechnical standards and best practices. Assist in the preparation of proposals and the pursuit of new business opportunities. Qualifications: Master's or Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering, with a significant portion focused on the mining industry (open-pit and/or underground). Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification is required. Extensive experience with geotechnical software for numerical modeling (e.g., FLAC, PLAXIS, Rocscience suite) and data analysis. Deep understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, geological engineering, and hydrogeology as applied to mining. Proven ability to lead complex projects, manage multiple tasks, and deliver high-quality technical solutions. Excellent report writing, presentation, and communication skills. Demonstrated experience in mentoring and developing engineering staff. Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a remote, global team. Familiarity with international mining standards and regulations. Experience in seismic hazard assessment and mitigation is a plus.
