About the role

GovCIO is excited to invite applications for the role of Remote UI/UX Designer. This position offers a unique opportunity to support the Veterans Readiness & Employment (VRE) Program Support and Enterprise Services (PSES) product line. As part of our dedicated team, you will play an integral role throughout the full UX lifecycle, which includes: • User research • Wireframing • Prototyping • Usability testing • Design system usage

The ideal candidate will have a passion for transforming complex requirements into intuitive workflows while ensuring all design work adheres to Section 508 accessibility standards. This role is fully remote within the United States.

Responsibilities include: • Designing wireframes, mockups, and high-fidelity prototypes using Figma. • Building components aligned with the VA.gov design system and Storybook libraries. • Supporting frontend development teams in implementing React-based UI features. • Translating requirements and user needs into intuitive, scalable interface patterns.

User Research & Usability Testing: • Conducting Veteran-centered user research sessions and usability tests. • Identifying workflow friction and opportunities for improvement using behavioral insights. • Documenting research findings to guide design decisions and backlog prioritization. • Validating concepts through iterative testing cycles with diverse user groups.

Design Systems, Accessibility & Documentation: • Ensuring all UI designs comply with WCAG/508 accessibility standards. • Maintaining and contributing to design system documentation and governance. • Producing clear UX artifacts including annotated wireframes, workflow diagrams, and specifications.

AI Enabled Design Support: • Utilizing AI-enabled tools to enhance workflow analysis, research synthesis, and pattern detection as appropriate. • Validating AI-generated recommendations through user testing and accessibility reviews. • Promoting responsible use of AI to enhance project velocity without compromising clarity or accessibility.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Agile Delivery: • Collaborating with product owners, developers, researchers, and SMEs to align design intent. • Participating in Agile ceremonies, planning sessions, and design reviews. • Clearly articulating design rationale, user needs, and constraints to stakeholders. • Supporting user story development, estimates, and refinement discussions.

Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree with 2-5 years of relevant UI/UX experience, or equivalent experience. • Proficiency in Figma, prototyping, and design system-driven workflows. • Experience with user research and usability testing. • Strong understanding of the UX design lifecycle, IA, interaction design, and content structure. • Knowledge of Section 508/WCAG accessibility compliance. • Experience working in Agile environments with cross-functional teams. • Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Confluence, and GitHub. • Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications: • Experience working with the VA or other federal agencies. • Familiarity with the VA.gov design system and content patterns. • Experience designing complex transactional workflows (benefits, eligibility, forms). • Experience improving workflows in policy-driven or compliance-heavy systems. • Familiarity with AI-enabled research or design tools.

Clearance Required: Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance.

Posted Salary Range: USD $85,000.00 - USD $95,000.00 /Yr.
