The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Around 600 employees work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment, as well as on managing natural hazards. The WSL offers the opportunity to work in an innovative environment.
The Science IT and Environmental Data group, part of the FOREMA research department, aims to provide state-of-the-art internal science IT technology consulting to enable WSL scientists to expand the boundaries of modern environmental research. The WSL is offering a tenure-track position as a Research Software Engineer – Scientific Software, Data Workflows and AI 60-80% (m/f/d) as soon as possible.
Become part of a small and dedicated group responsible for building state-of-the-art science IT capabilities at WSL. In the role of Research Software Engineer, you will primarily focus on the development and consulting of scientific software, data workflows, and reproducible data pipelines with a focus on the responsible use of AI. You will provide expert advice, training materials, and practical support to researchers in developing scientific applications and computational workflows, and lead the standardization of tools, frameworks, best practices, and methods within the WSL's science IT ecosystem. You will lead and support the responsible use of AI tools for scientific software development and advise on the appropriate scientific use of machine learning algorithms and AI. Through close collaboration with other science IT profiles, you will ensure coherent services and consistent science IT support for all researchers, fostering internal collaboration and knowledge sharing among science IT users at WSL.

- Development and consulting for scientific software solutions.
- Creation of data workflows and reproducible data pipelines.
- Expert guidance on the responsible use of AI tools.
Qualifications
- Completed degree in Software Engineering, Data Science, or a natural science field (or comparable education and skills) with at least two years of professional experience.
- Profound knowledge in professional research software engineering with the ability to understand and write code in various programming languages used in research (e.g., Python, R, C/C++, etc.) is mandatory.
- Experience in AI topics as well as with research data workflows/pipelines is also necessary.
- The ideal profile will be rounded off by an understanding of modern research data management practices and experience with modern AI tools for code development.
- Knowledge of agile software development methods with short release cycles is essential for this position.
- Knowledge or interest in environmental research is also required.
- You enjoy working closely with researchers and are a communicative, reliable, and team-oriented person with excellent English skills.
