About the role

About Akamai Intelligence

Akamai Intelligence is seeking an experienced and highly capable Security Applications Engineer IV to serve as a senior technical expert supporting the design, integration, troubleshooting, and optimization of advanced electronic security systems across Northern Virginia. This position plays a critical role in engineering and sustaining Physical Access Control Systems (PACS) and related security technologies, while providing technical leadership, system oversight, and mentorship to junior staff. Senior PACS engineering roles commonly involve requirements analysis, system development, testing, documentation, integration support, and continuous system performance improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical expert for complex electronic security system design, integration, troubleshooting, and sustainment activities.
  • Lead engineering efforts for PACS and related systems, including requirements analysis, system development, configuration, testing, validation, and performance optimization.
  • Support the design, implementation, and maintenance of security, fire, and/or IT-related systems in accordance with operational needs and customer requirements.
  • Analyze system requirements, evaluate technical solutions, and recommend enhancements to improve reliability, performance, maintainability, and overall system effectiveness.
  • Provide technical oversight for engineering activities, including hardware and software support, programming, integration, and lifecycle improvements.
  • Develop, review, and maintain engineering documentation, system configurations, test plans, procedures, diagrams, and related technical materials.
  • Conduct high-level system evaluations, identify deficiencies or risks, and implement corrective actions or improvement strategies.
  • Support cost and schedule management, program review, refinement, and improvement of development methods for security applications and related systems.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, customers, vendors, and stakeholders to support successful execution of engineering tasks and project milestones.
  • Troubleshoot complex system issues and provide advanced technical support for integrated security systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff by providing guidance, training, and support for engineering best practices.
  • Support fielded systems across customer environments throughout Northern Virginia and travel within the region as mission requirements dictate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or 10 years of experience supporting engineering activities in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting system development, programming, software and hardware support, cost and schedule management, program review and refinement, and improvement of development methods for security, fire, and/or IT systems.
  • Strong knowledge of PACS and related physical security technologies, including system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Experience producing and maintaining technical documentation, engineering plans, and system support materials.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical requirements and develop practical, scalable engineering solutions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to brief technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering efforts and mentor less experienced technical personnel.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance; Top Secret eligibility generally requires U.S. citizenship and successful completion of the background investigation process.
  • Must be able to work on-site at customer or operational locations throughout Northern Virginia and travel locally as required to support engineering, integration, testing, and troubleshooting activities. Cleared roles in Northern Virginia commonly require regional on-site support.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at elevated heights when supporting field engineering, inspections, installations, or system troubleshooting. Ladder climbing is a common physical requirement in field engineering and technical site-support roles.
  • Must be able to consistently lift up to 50 pounds in support of equipment handling, installation, and service-related activities. Lifting up to 50 pounds is a common stated requirement in field and security system technician roles.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record that meets company standards to support authorized use of a company vehicle. Employers commonly define a clean driving record as one free of moving violations, accidents, convictions, or points, subject to company policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with enterprise electronic security systems, integrated access control environments, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and related infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting government, defense, or other high-security environments.
  • Familiarity with engineering support for regulated or mission-critical environments requiring strong documentation, system reliability, and technical compliance.
