Role Summary

The Senior Accountant (Shipping Commercial) will own the end‑to‑end financial management of our shipping activities. You will be the financial backbone for pre‑fixture, post‑fixture, freight, hire, demurrage, and voyage‑based accounting, delivering accurate reporting, insightful analysis, and full compliance with maritime accounting standards. This is a hands‑on, senior‑level position that works closely with Operations, Commercial, and Business Development teams to translate commercial transactions into clear, actionable financial insight.


Key Responsibilities

Area Responsibilities
Transaction Management • Process and reconcile freight, hire, demurrage, and other voyage‑related financial transactions.
• Ensure timely and accurate invoicing, billing, and payment posting.
Pre‑ & Post‑Fixture Accounting • Record and monitor all pre‑fixture costs (charter party negotiations, deposits, guarantees, etc.).
• Perform post‑fixture accounting, including adjustments, accruals, and final settlement.
Voyage‑Wise P&L • Prepare detailed profit‑and‑loss statements for each voyage, highlighting revenue, expenses, and variances.
• Provide variance analysis and recommendations to improve profitability.
Financial Reporting & Compliance • Maintain financial records in line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines, US GAAP/IFRS, and any client‑specific accounting policies.
• Support internal and external audits; ensure statutory compliance (tax, customs, port fees).
Cash Flow & Working Capital • Monitor receivables, payables, and cash flow specific to voyages; manage collections and vendor payments.
• Forecast cash requirements for upcoming voyages and charter periods.
Cross‑Functional Coordination • Liaise with Operations, Commercial, and Technical teams to gather financial inputs and resolve discrepancies.
• Provide financial training and guidance to non‑finance stakeholders as needed.
Process Improvement • Identify and implement efficiencies in accounting workflows, automation opportunities, and reporting tools.
Ad‑hoc Projects • Support strategic initiatives such as fleet acquisition analysis, cost‑benefit studies, and sustainability reporting.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Requirement Details
Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, ACCA, CMA or equivalent preferred).
Experience Minimum 5‑7 years of progressive accounting experience in the maritime/shipping industry, with a focus on commercial accounting and charter party finance.
Technical Skills • Strong knowledge of maritime accounting standards, charter party terms, and freight/hire structures.
• Proficiency in ERP/financial systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or specialized maritime modules).
• Advanced Excel/Power Query skills; familiarity with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau) is a plus.
Regulatory Knowledge Understanding of IMO regulations, tax regimes for shipping (e.g., tonnage tax, flag state requirements), and customs/port fee structures.
Analytical Ability Proven ability to produce voyage‑level P&L, perform variance analysis, and present findings to senior management.
Communication Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to translate complex financial data into clear business insights for non‑finance audiences.
Personal Attributes High integrity, attention to detail, proactive problem‑solver, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced, multi‑national environment.

  • Experience with digital maritime platforms (e.g., Veson, ShipNet, BunkerLog).
