THE OPPORTUNITY

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior administrative advisor to Chief & Council, supporting governance processes, strategic decision‑making, and policy implementation.
  • Implement Council resolutions and ensure alignment between governance direction, organizational operations, and community priorities.
  • Uphold clear boundaries between governance and administration, consistent with Nation policy and best practices.
  • Lead the implementation of the Nation's strategic plan, translating priorities into coordinated departmental work plans and measurable outcomes.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and support continuous improvement across programs and services.
  • Provide executive oversight of all Nation departments and delegated programs, ensuring effective service delivery, accountability, and cross‑departmental collaboration.
  • Mentor and support the Assistant Administrator and senior leadership team, fostering a culture of professionalism, respect, and teamwork.
  • Oversee budgeting, financial controls, audits, and compliance with funding agreements and legislation.
  • Support long‑term financial sustainability and responsible stewardship of Nation resources.
  • Champion a healthy, culturally grounded workplace, aligned with trauma‑informed and respectful practices.
  • Support workforce planning, leadership development, and strong HR governance.
  • Provide executive oversight across lands, natural resources, housing, capital projects, health, education, social services, and economic development, ensuring alignment with Nation values and long‑term goals.
  • Support transparent, respectful communication with community members, Elders, leadership, and external partners.
  • Strengthen relationships with federal, provincial, and First Nation organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, policies, agreements, privacy obligations, and risk management frameworks.

TOTAL REWARDS

The 'Nam̱gis First Nation offers a competitive total compensation package, including comprehensive group medical benefits, pension participation, and an annual salary range of $160,000 - $180,000, commensurate with skills and experience. A relocation allowance will be provided to the successful candidate. As this is an onsite leadership role, relocation assistance and housing support will be provided. About Alert Bay, Bc

Alert Bay is a small, culturally vibrant community located on Cormorant Island, a 4.9‑kilometre‑long island just off northern Vancouver Island. It is home to the 'Na̱mg̱is First Nation's main village of Yalis, alongside the Village of Alert Bay and neighbouring Kwakwaka'wakw families. The island is rich with history and deep cultural significance for the 'Na̱mg̱is people, whose territory spans the surrounding waters, islands, and the Nimpkish River watershed. Today, Alert Bay is known for its strong cultural identity, access to traditional Big House ceremonies and dance performances, the renowned U'mista Cultural Centre, and its breathtaking natural surroundings. Despite its small size, the community is active and welcoming, offering schools, local services, and regular ferry access to nearby Port McNeill.
