Senior AI Engineer / AI Technical Lead

Your role in the team

• You take over the technical leadership for our project area and drive our work package forward.

• You write concepts, make architecture decisions, and are responsible for the implementation of the components.

• You decide which approaches are realistically feasible - and find solutions when they are not.

• You communicate with industry sites and partners and understand where AI can truly be helpful.

• You structure requirements and translate complex processes into functional technical solutions for specific problems (e.g., information processing or communication between organizations).

• You develop functional prototypes (e.g., LLM systems, chatbots, assistance solutions).

• You regularly test these together with project partners in realistic scenarios.

• You consider topics such as data protection, data security, and regulatory requirements (e.g., in the public sector).

• You work closely with a university, project partners, and interdisciplinary teams.

• You participate in workshops, tests, and exchange formats, actively contributing your perspective.

• You document architecture decisions, insights, and outcomes in a way that others can build upon.

• You ensure that results are not just "kept in mind" but become usable.

What we offer

• Work model: Hybrid (2 days in the office & 3 days remote work), also possible entirely on-site; according to individual agreement and depending on the phase of work within the company.

• Working hours: 40h, weekdays.

• Start date: June 2026.

• Type of contract: Fixed-term employment within the scope of an external client project for 3 years. The fixed term ends upon project completion. Depending on development and ongoing needs, a transition into a permanent employment contract is possible.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or a comparable qualification in the technical field.

• You work in a structured and independent manner.

• You can familiarize yourself with complex topics and stay engaged until you have understood them.

• You make decisions and take responsibility for them.

• You can explain technical contexts clearly.

• You work confidently with different stakeholders (research, partners, departments).

• Very good knowledge of German and English.

• You are eager to rethink and rebuild things from scratch.

• You don't just want to implement, but also understand why something works or doesn't.

• You are interested in research without losing touch with practical application.

• You enjoy collaborating with universities and partners.

• Occasional business trips within NRW and the DACH region.

• Ideally, you can come to our office in Kamp-Lintfort twice a week without any issues.

Experience

• Several years of experience in software development in the field of AI / Machine Learning / LLMs.

• Experience in designing and implementing complex systems.
