Overview

In this senior role you will lead automation engineering for GMP and non‑GMP control systems at Cambridge and support cross‑site initiatives. You’ll steer design, build, commissioning, and lifecycle management while ensuring compliant, high‑quality operation. You’ll collaborate with Process Sciences, Manufacturing, QA, Facilities, and other stakeholders to deliver robust automation solutions and solve complex challenges. This position offers hands‑on leadership with cross‑site impact and 24/7 support responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior automation engineering support across Process Sciences labs and manufacturing sites, ensuring consistent coverage across locations
• Lead automation projects through all lifecycle phases as technical lead (design, delivery, startup, commissioning, validation, operational support)
• Apply advanced automation principles to design, integrate, and commission systems, including specifications and issue resolution
• Develop and maintain automation capabilities, standards, guidelines, and procedures aligned with best practices and compliant design principles
• Review process and automation designs for alignment with quality frameworks (ASTM E2500) and promote safe, compliant operation
• Collaborate with manufacturing, process development, facilities, QA, and others to define requirements and support system implementations and technology transfers
• Lead engineering investigations and provide technical support for troubleshooting, optimization, deviations, change controls, and CAPAs
• Provide technical direction for automation service providers, integrators, and technicians, ensuring safe, compliant maintenance and project execution

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
• 6+ years of experience with design, build, testing, and operational support of PLC-based automation systems
• Proven experience with Rockwell Automation platforms (PlantPAx, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View SE) across projects
• Experience with additional automation/building management platforms (GE Unicorn, Delta Controls enteliWEB, Intellution iFix, Siemens Apogee/Desigo CC) - preferred but not required
• Familiarity with virtualized infrastructure (Nutanix AHV, VMware) and integration of virtual/physical automation in GMP environments
• Strong GMP manufacturing background and track record as technical lead for automation projects
• Knowledge of GMPs, GEP, ISA S88, GAMP, ASTM E2500, ISPE guidance
• Ability to translate user requirements into automation designs supporting tech transfers, scale‑up, and equipment integration
• Capacity to work across Alnylam MA sites and participate in rotating 24/7 on‑call automation support
