About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Azure Automation Specialist for a contract opportunity supporting Connected Services BC (CSBC) and the Public Cloud Team.
This role supports the delivery, automation, and operation of enterprise public cloud services used by BC Government ministries. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and operation of automation for the Azure Landing Zone, helping ensure Azure environments are provisioned and managed in a consistent, secure, scalable, and compliant manner.
The work is fully remote, with the expectation that the resource is available during core Pacific Time business hours for collaboration through Microsoft Teams.
Role Overview
The Azure Automation Specialist will work closely with platform engineers, security teams, and service management teams to build and maintain automation for Azure platform services.
The role is focused on Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, Azure Landing Zone automation, subscription onboarding, security guardrails, monitoring, compliance, and operational readiness.
This is a strong fit for a senior Azure platform engineer or cloud automation specialist with hands-on experience in enterprise-scale Azure environments.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code for the Azure Landing Zone and related platform services.
- Building, operating, and improving CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and platform components, preferably using GitHub Actions.
- Automating Azure subscription provisioning, onboarding workflows, and shared service configuration.
- Implementing and maintaining security, policy, monitoring, and compliance guardrails.
- Supporting incident response, platform service improvement, and operational readiness activities.
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation, operational procedures, and runbooks.
- Collaborating with Azure, AWS, security, service management, and hybrid infrastructure teams.
- Supporting consistent, secure, and scalable cloud platform operations across ministry workloads.
Must-Have Requirements
Candidates should clearly demonstrate the following:
- 5+ years of hands-on Microsoft Azure experience in enterprise or large-scale environments.
- 3+ years of Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform, Bicep, ARM, or similar tooling.
- 3+ years of CI/CD pipeline experience, with GitHub Actions strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of Azure identity, networking, and security experience, including services such as:
- Microsoft Entra ID
- Azure RBAC
- Azure Policy
- Azure networking
- security and compliance controls
- 2+ years of Git-based source control experience in team-based development environments.
- Experience working in Agile, DevOps, or product-oriented delivery teams.
- Ability to work remotely and be available during 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time for meetings and collaboration.
Nice-to-Have Experience
The following experience would be considered an asset:
- Experience operating cloud platforms in government, public sector, or regulated environments.
- Experience supporting multi-cloud environments, especially familiarity with AWS.
- Experience with Azure cost management and FinOps practices.
- Automation and scripting experience using PowerShell or Python.
- Experience using Jira Service Management for incident, change, or service request workflows.
- Experience supporting Azure Landing Zones, enterprise cloud foundations, or shared cloud platform services.
- Experience writing operational runbooks, support documentation, and technical implementation guides.
