As a Senior Back-end Software Engineer within PNC's Retail Technology organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA, Dallas, TX, Strongsville, OH, Birmingham, AL, Phoenix, AZ, Lakewood, CO or Philadelphia, PA.
We are seeking a skilled Senior Back-end Software Engineer to design, build, and support high‑quality, scalable backend services. This role focuses on modern Java development using Spring and reactive programming principles, deploying cloud‑native applications, and collaborating closely with cross‑functional Agile teams to deliver reliable and secure solutions aligned with business needs.
The ideal candidate is proactive, communicative, and comfortable working in fast‑paced Agile environments while maintaining high engineering and security standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain high‑quality, scalable backend services using Java (18+) and the Spring framework, with hands‑on experience in Spring WebFlux for reactive, non‑blocking applications
- Design, implement, and support RESTful APIs, applying reactive programming principles and following established architectural and security standards
- Build and maintain application data interactions using NoSQL databases, with preference for MongoDB, including query development when needed
- Deploy, run, and support applications on cloud‑native platforms based on Kubernetes, including experience with OpenShift
- Perform ongoing application maintenance, including troubleshooting, defect resolution, and performance tuning in both development and production environments
- Utilize standard debugging, logging, monitoring, and diagnostic tools to efficiently identify and resolve application issues
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with Business partners, Product Owners, and Agile team members to ensure technical solutions align with business requirements
- Actively participate in backlog refinement and grooming sessions by reviewing requirements, validating technical feasibility, and identifying dependencies early
- Proactively ask questions, clarify requirements, and raise concerns to reduce ambiguity and improve overall solution quality
- Work within an Agile development team to deliver reliable, well‑tested, and maintainable software
- Adhere to secure coding practices, engineering standards, and SDLC processes established within the organization
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong experience with Java (version 18 or higher)
- Proficiency with the Spring framework, including Spring WebFlux
- Solid understanding of reactive programming concepts and non‑blocking application design
- Experience designing and supporting RESTful APIs
- Hands‑on experience with NoSQL databases, preferably MongoDB
- Working knowledge of containerized, cloud‑native application deployment, including Kubernetes and OpenShift
- Experience troubleshooting and supporting applications in production environments
- Familiarity with logging, monitoring, and observability tools
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in Agile/Scrum teams
- Ability to translate business requirements into sound technical solutions
- Commitment to secure coding and adherence to engineering standards
Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Skills
- Exposure to frontend development using Angular
- Ability to contribute to or maintain user‑facing components when needed

Pay Transparency
Base Salary: $55,000.00 – $152,375.00
Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data and on individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with the payment based upon company, business and/or individual performance.
