Job Summary
The Senior Cost Accountant is pivotal in managing the daily accounting functions for PII's construction subsidiaries, including Peckham Road Corp. (PRC), Palmer Paving Corp. (PPC), and T. Miozzi, LLC. This role emphasizes job costing, work-in-progress analysis, and operational reporting specifically tailored for paving operations.
Serving as a vital link between Finance and Construction Operations, you will ensure that financial results accurately represent field performance. This high-visibility position offers significant growth opportunities into broader financial leadership roles. You will report directly to the Construction Controller and indirectly to the Vice President of Construction.
Essential Functions
- Drive Results: Ensure project financial performance through precise job cost reporting and work-in-progress (WIP) analysis that connects field execution to financial outcomes.
- Engage Collaboratively: Work closely with Project Managers, Estimators, and Contract Administrators to ensure accurate job setups, cost projections, and backlog reporting, fostering financial discipline throughout project lifecycles.
- Effective Communication: Collaborate with Job Cost Specialists to ensure accurate documentation of subcontract and purchase commitments, ensuring alignment of purchase orders and AP transactions with correct jobs, phases, and accounting treatments.
- Enhance Measurement: Improve financial and operational reporting to deliver actionable insights into project and divisional performance, utilizing automation and emerging technologies to boost visibility and efficiency.
- Conduct Analysis: Perform variance analysis of actual results versus budget and previous years, identifying key cost drivers across various areas and recommending necessary corrective actions.
- Commit to Service: Conduct thorough cost and production analysis to maintain accuracy and transparency in project costs, including labor and equipment utilization.
- Ensure Transparency: Aid in project closeout procedures, which includes financial reconciliations, revenue and cost reviews, and documenting key lessons learned.
- Support Compliance: Assist with audit workpapers and support internal and external audits to guarantee compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.
- Ownership of Budgeting: Contribute to budgeting and forecasting efforts, including revenue recognition, cost projections, and turning backlog into realistic financial expectations.
- Foster Dedication: Participate in project review meetings, translating financial data into actionable insights to reinforce accountability and promote continuous improvement.
Requirements, Education, and Experience
- Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Accounting.
- Experience with Viewpoint Vista or comparable construction/project-based accounting systems is preferred.
- Intermediate proficiency in Excel, with the ability to analyze and interpret financial data.
- A minimum of six (6) years of accounting experience, including at least three (3) years in construction or manufacturing; experience with WIP is strongly preferred.
- In-depth understanding of GAAP, including revenue recognition, cost accounting, and financial reporting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the capability to build cross-functional relationships and clearly convey financial information.
- Proven ability to collaborate, influence, and achieve results through a proactive and solutions-oriented approach.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Travel
Position may require up to 15-20% travel by personal vehicle to various offices based on business needs.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
This job operates primarily in a professional office setting, utilizing standard office equipment. While predominantly sedentary, the role will require occasional walking, bending, or standing as necessary.

Compensation
$90,000 - $120,000 yearly salary.
