Overview
Fearless is seeking a DevOps Engineer to support a large‑scale federal workforce training and learning management program. This role manages and optimizes database systems that support a cloud‑hosted Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring data reliability, performance, and security across the platform. The position combines database expertise with DevOps practices, focusing on automation, monitoring, and integration of data systems into continuous delivery pipelines. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in cloud environments, understands how data flows through applications, and can ensure that database infrastructure supports both operational performance and reporting needs.
The Senior Consultant collaborates with cross‑functional teams to align technical vision, implementation, and quality of software systems across development, reliability, testing, and operations. The role bridges business objectives with technical execution in software development, infrastructure, security, and testing at an advanced application level of proficiency. The Sr. Consultant works on projects that ensure scalable, secure, and reliable solutions while mentoring engineers, fostering collaboration, and aligning stakeholders with product and project goals.
Responsibilities
- Manage, maintain, and optimize database systems supporting LMS platforms and associated applications.
- Design and implement database solutions that support scalability, performance, and data integrity in cloud‑hosted environments.
- Support integration of database systems into CI/CD pipelines, including automated deployments, migrations, and version control.
- Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning and optimization strategies.
- Ensure data security and compliance with federal standards, including encryption, access controls, and auditability.
- Develop and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data availability and resilience.
- Collaborate with software developers and DevOps engineers to support application performance and data integration needs.
- Support reporting and analytics capabilities by ensuring accurate, consistent, and accessible data structures.
- Troubleshoot database‑related issues, including performance degradation, data inconsistencies, and system failures.
- Implement monitoring and alerting for database health, performance, and security events.
- Document database architectures, schemas, and operational procedures to support maintainability and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of database management practices within a DevSecOps framework.
- Manage database lifecycle within the CMS AWS/Hybrid Cloud environment; ensure security, backups, DR, performance and compliance.
- Implement DevSecOps for data platforms: CI/CD for database changes, IaC practices for DB provisioning and monitoring/alerting.
- Ensure data integrity and governance, encryption at rest/in transit, and alignment with federal security requirements.
- Collaborate on data integration, ETL pipelines, and reporting data stores used by LMS analytics.
Place of Performance & Travel
- Primarily remote, but must be available to attend in‑person customer meetings at the client’s headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, as needed.

Work Experience
Project Skill and Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in database engineering, database administration, or related DevOps roles.
- Proven experience managing relational and/or NoSQL databases in cloud environments (AWS preferred) and containerized services; knowledge of data security standards.
- Strong understanding of database design, data modeling, indexing, and performance optimization techniques.
- Experience integrating database systems into CI/CD pipelines, including schema migrations and automated deployments.
- Experience implementing database security practices, including encryption, access control, and compliance with federal standards.
- Familiarity with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies for enterprise systems.
- Experience working within DevOps or DevSecOps environments, including automation and infrastructure‑as‑code practices.
- Experience supporting data reporting, analytics, or business intelligence systems is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) or similar enterprise platforms is preferred.
- Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex database and system issues.
- Experience working in federal environments and supporting compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST, FISMA) is highly desirable.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance.

Compensation
- Minimum Salary: $120,588
- Salary Midpoint: $156,764
- Maximum Salary: $195,955
- Hiring Range for Role: $120,588 – $144,000
- Eligible for a discretionary bonus based on individual and company performance criteria.
