As a Distinguished Engineer at Capital One, you will be a part of a community of technical experts working to define the future of banking in the cloud.
Capital One is seeking a Senior Distinguished Engineer to steward the technical strategy for our software delivery ecosystem. In this role, you will look across the enterprise to drive a singular mission: ensuring that the most secure and reliable path to production is also the easiest to use.
Role
You will act as a strategic partner to the “One Pipeline” organization and the broader engineering community, helping 17,000+ developers deliver business value with speed and confidence. Your focus is on reducing cognitive load—abstracting away the complexity of building, testing, and running code so that our engineers can focus entirely on building great products.
As a Senior Distinguished Engineer, you are an individual contributor with enterprise‑wide impact. You will define the future of how software is delivered at Capital One, validating your strategies through deep technical design and direct contribution to the foundational systems that set our standards. You will operate across organizational silos, integrating disparate technical requirements into a cohesive, elegant developer experience.
What You Will Do
- Shape the Delivery Ecosystem: Lead the architectural vision for a delivery experience that abstracts away complexity. Drive the creation of “paved roads” that allow teams to move fast without needing to be infrastructure experts.
- Enable Partner Teams: Partner with Developer Experience teams across the enterprise to ensure our delivery platforms unlock their initiatives. Define the standards for how software flows from commit to production, maximizing developer velocity while enabling the safety and quality checks that other teams depend on.
- Drive Strategic Decisions: Serve as a subject matter expert for the enterprise, guiding decisions on when to adopt industry standards versus building bespoke solutions. Ensure our technical designs deliver tangible business value.
- Build Foundational Systems: Validate architectural decisions by building the core components that teams depend on. Contribute directly to the patterns and platforms that define our delivery experience.
- Grow Technical Leaders: Mentor senior engineers and foster a culture where high‑quality code and operational excellence are the defaults. Attract top talent to Capital One and develop the next generation of technical leaders.

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- At least 9 years of experience leading technical strategy for large‑scale engineering organizations, with measurable improvements to developer productivity or delivery metrics.
- At least 5 years experience working with modern infrastructure and software delivery patterns to architect and optimize high‑efficiency developer experiences
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in leading cross‑functional platform adoption for 1,000+ engineers by aligning stakeholders across diverse business units
- Proven track record of building technical consensus and driving tool adoption across independent engineering teams

Salary
- Remote (Regardless of Location): $286,200 – $326,700 for Sr Distinguished Engineer
- Chicago, IL: $286,200 – $326,700 for Sr Distinguished Engineer
- McLean, VA: $314,800 – $359,300 for Sr Distinguished Engineer
- New York, NY: $343,400 – $392,000 for Sr Distinguished Engineer
- Richmond, VA: $286,200 – $326,700 for Sr Distinguished Engineer
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. The actual annualized salary amount offered will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
