Senior Embedded Systems Engineer

Hyperscale Power

About the role

About Us

Hyperscale Power is a deep-tech startup based in the Zürich region and we are on a mission: We are changing the way electrical power is delivered to the systems driving the next industrial revolution. Data centers, EV chargers, and large‑scale renewable power plants all face the same bottleneck: efficiently and safely converting massive amounts of electricity. Our solid‑state transformers (SSTs) provide a smaller, lighter, and cleaner alternative using the smartest power electronics topologies in combination with cutting edge semiconductor technology.

We invite you to join us in driving change with our human‑centered approach, uniting bright minds around a shared vision. Together, we can change the paradigm of how the world is electrified.

About Our Technology

While the electric power demands for single data centers are breaking the Gigawatt barrier, their power delivery architecture hasn't changed in decades and is based on a 100‑year‑old transformer technology that is bulky, inefficient, and suffers from lead times of 18‑24 months.

We are here to fix this problem.

Our SSTs are 10× smaller than existing solutions, use ~90% less material, and achieve up to 98.5% energy‑conversion efficiency, cutting lead times from years to months. Our SSTs electrify the future.

The Role

Hyperscale Power is looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to join our team.

In this crucial role, you will take the lead in the core control firmware implementation for the SST on embedded systems platforms. You will work closely together with our elite team of power electronics and control experts to ensure that every SST system meets all the requirements and operates with optimal performance. You will also be responsible for managing customer support requests related to firmware for deployed units.

Your Tasks

  • Design, develop, and optimize FPGA‑based digital control systems using VHDL for solid‑state transformers
  • Implement high‑speed control algorithms directly in FPGA fabric: PWM modulators, acquisition and processing of sensing data, protection logic, and fault handling with sub‑microsecond latency
  • Create low‑level peripheral drivers, communication interfaces (e.g., SPI, I²C, RS‑232/485, CAN, Ethernet), and advanced timing synchronization modules in VHDL
  • Perform timing analysis, simulation, synthesis, place & route, and resource optimization on Xilinx/AMD, Intel/Altera, or Lattice FPGAs/CPLDs
  • Develop and integrate FPGA + microcontroller/DSP hybrid architectures, including custom IP cores, data interfaces, and high‑speed data exchange
  • Ensure functional safety and cybersecurity compliance for FPGA‑based systems
  • Collaborate with power electronics hardware engineers on PCB‑level FPGA integration and gate driver and sensor interfacing
  • Mentor junior engineers in FPGA design best practices, code reviews, and architecture decisions
  • Contribute to technical documentation, IP reuse strategy, and continuous improvement of the FPGA design flow

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical, computer or automation engineering or related field
  • 4+ years of full‑time hands‑on experience in firmware development for industrial prototypes and/or products with a strong focus on FPGA development
  • Expert‑level proficiency in VHDL and FPGA design flow (AMD/Xilinx Vivado, Intel/Altera Quartus, Lattice Diamond, or equivalent)
  • Understanding of power electronic converter systems and their control techniques with FPGA hardware acceleration
  • Strong knowledge of digital signal processing, high‑speed clocking, and timing closure in FPGAs
  • Hands‑on experience with simulation tools, on‑chip debugging, and version control
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards and tools for FPGA designs is an advantage
  • Strong organization, written, and verbal communication skills
  • B permit or higher in Switzerland

What we offer

  • A crucial position in Europe's only SST startup with the potential to disrupt the way electric power is delivered to modern high‑power loads
  • A competitively paid position in a highly skilled and motivated team with a common vision
  • Participation in our Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) to make the company's success your success
  • We live openness. Collaboration and inclusivity are important cornerstones of our culture. We practice openness, fostering trust and respect.

If you are a passionate FPGA and embedded systems expert with industrial background who loves solving complex power electronics challenges with hardware‑accelerated solutions, we want to hear from you.

We foster a supportive work environment that values collaboration, innovation, and growth. Join our team and be part of an organization dedicated to making a difference in the industry.
