Senior Engineer - Wastewater
Connecticut Innovations
About the role
Company Overview
Connecticut Innovations (“CI”) is Connecticut’s strategic venture capital arm, serving a portfolio of 220+ companies across various industries, with strengths in life sciences, technology, and climate tech.
Portfolio Company: Home | CREW Carbon
CREW’s technology and services make wastewater treatment cheaper and more efficient, while permanently sequestering CO₂. Leveraging advanced chemistry, natural minerals, and AI, we’ve developed and are deploying a category‑defining process intensification technology, with decarbonization at its core. Today, we help wastewater treatment facilities and operators:
- Stabilize pH & alkalinity 24/7
- Eliminate hazardous chemicals & cut costs
- Avoid $100M+ infrastructure upgrades
- Capture & Store CO₂
We are currently deploying this technology across the US and Europe. In addition, we’ve signed $30M+ in carbon removal offtake agreements with leading corporations looking to meet their climate goals, supercharging CREW’s geographical expansion.
CREW has offices and labs in New Haven, CT and offices in Brooklyn, NY.
We are funded by Counteract, ReGen, Ponderosa, Connecticut Innovations and others. We’ve secured large contracts with the premier buyers of carbon credits through the Frontier Climate Fund (Stripe, Shopify, Autodesk, McKinsey, among others) and have been selected by the Department of Energy as one of the few potential suppliers of high‑quality carbon credits to the federal government.
About The Role
Position: Senior Engineer – Wastewater
Location: Onsite at our office in Brooklyn, NY or New Haven, CT (full‑time)
You will contribute to process design, optimization, and technical implementation of CREW’s process intensification and carbon removal systems at wastewater treatment facilities. You will use your knowledge of process modeling and engineering, aqueous chemistry, and wastewater operations to design and optimize dosing systems that achieve both treatment efficiency and measurable greenhouse‑gas reductions.
You will play a key role in translating CREW’s scientific and engineering innovations into scalable, real‑world systems. Responsibilities include analyzing and interpreting lab and operational process data, designing and refining process flow diagrams, developing mass and energy balances, supporting demonstration and full‑scale deployments, troubleshooting process performance in the field, documenting protocols, and driving customer success at partner sites.
This is an ideal opportunity for a process‑minded, mission‑driven engineer who thrives at the intersection of environmental technology and practical system design.
Responsibilities
- Lead process optimization for CREW’s process intensification and carbon removal systems in wastewater applications, and contribute to system design improvements.
- Develop process flow diagrams, mass and energy balances, and dosing system designs to meet project goals.
- Conduct process modeling and performance simulations using relevant software.
- Collaborate with the Science and Operations teams to translate lab results and field data into scalable process parameters.
- Troubleshoot process issues during operation and propose technical solutions.
- Serve as a technical lead in partner engagements, helping ensure our partners are satisfied and confident in system performance.
- Partner with our Operations team to ensure process reliability and alignment with process optimization and carbon removal targets.
- Provide technical documentation, training, and design input to internal teams and external partners. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, standardization of design templates, and lessons‑learned captured across deployments.
- Stay current on emerging trends in wastewater treatment, process intensification, and environmental technology.
Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (required) in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field; a Master’s or PhD degree is a bonus.
- 3–7+ years of experience in wastewater process engineering, process design, or related fields (municipal or industrial).
- Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes, including nutrient removal, solids handling, and pH and alkalinity control.
- Experience developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, site layouts, and mass balance calculations.
- Familiarity with process modeling tools (BioWin, SUMO, GPS‑X, MATLAB, or equivalent).
- Comfortable working in a rapidly evolving startup setting and able to quickly synthesize new information to proactively adjust focus and maintain high‑impact results.
- You practice extreme ownership (no task is too small).
- You love being in the trenches with your team and working with high empathy.
- You have a growth mindset.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience in carbon capture, CO₂ sequestration, or water‑chemistry‑based carbon removal technologies.
- Field experience with pilot systems, process commissioning, or operational troubleshooting is highly desirable.
- Experience integrating instrumentation, controls, and monitoring systems for process optimization.
- Experience with CAD software, including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or Revit.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is competitive and will depend on many factors including experience, education, and expertise. We offer a competitive benefits package with insurance, vacation, retirement, and equity options.
