The Senior Financial Accountant oversees the full spectrum of general ledger and management accounting activities, ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting and strong financial controls. This role manages monthly management accounts, cash flow forecasting, payroll, and reconciliations while partnering closely with leadership and operational teams to support business growth and strategic decision-making. The position also plays a key role in ERP systems, process improvements, and acting as a trusted right-hand to the President in a growing, hands-on environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate, timely monthly management accounts with clear, informed supporting commentaries for leadership and board review.
- Run weekly accounts receivable reports, proactively follow up on outstanding balances, and manage credit memos to optimize cash collection.
- Generate daily invoices and purchase orders, ensuring accuracy and completeness, even at low to moderate volumes.
- Verify financial transactions and maintain robust general ledger integrity through regular journal entries and reconciliations.
- Perform general bank reconciliations for the primary operating account and secondary accounts, resolving discrepancies promptly.
- Create profit and loss statements and balance sheets using revenue recognition principles, including pulling data from QuickBooks into spreadsheets, adjusting for accruals, and posting appropriate journal entries back into the system.
- Analyze accruals to understand what has been provisioned and the rationale behind each provision, ensuring appropriate revenue and cost recognition.
- Prepare and present P&L and balance sheet information for the board, providing clear explanations and insights on financial performance.
- Manage monthly payroll preparation and processing, including revising benefits and completing all associated monthly and annual reporting.
- Open mail, perform bank runs, and handle day-to-day transactional finance responsibilities as needed in a small, collaborative team.
- Lead cash flow forecasting activities, including detailed 13-week and 1-year cash flow forecasts to support planned acquisitions and growth.
- Work closely with sales teams to understand project timelines and commercial terms, enabling accurate forecasting of cash inflows and revenue recognition.
- Contribute to 9+3 and 6+6 forecasting, using actual data and trends to project full-year financial performance.
- Focus on strengthening financial controls and reconciliations across the business, ensuring all processes are fully documented and consistently applied.
- Identify, drive, and implement continuous improvements across all finance processes, including costing methodologies and reporting frameworks.
- Act as the financial lead on ad hoc projects, providing analysis, insight, and financial guidance to support strategic initiatives.
- Deliver financial acumen coaching and training to non-finance colleagues through both formal sessions and informal networking, improving financial understanding across the business.
- Prepare business KPI analysis and reporting on projects and contracts, highlighting performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Support the preparation of budgets and forecasts, working collaboratively with other departments and leadership.
- Serve as a business partner to the Managing Director and other departments, providing financial insight to help achieve company objectives.
- Oversee the annual external financial audit, coordinating with auditors, preparing required schedules, and addressing queries.
- Manage and improve the company’s IT-related financial systems, controls, and procedures, particularly around ERP and accounting platforms.
- Communicate effectively with internal teams and external organizations at all levels, representing the finance function professionally.
- Adapt quickly to changing priorities and switch between tasks during the working day, often under time pressure, while maintaining accuracy.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with all functions of the business and related entities, ensuring effective information flow and collaboration.
- Provide coaching and mentoring within the team where required, sharing knowledge and supporting skill development.
- Promote and represent the company positively, setting a strong personal example in professionalism, integrity, and teamwork.

Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field.
- 5+ years of general ledger (GL) accounting experience with demonstrated ownership of month-end close activities.
- Strong experience with general ledger accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end processes.
- Proficiency in preparing monthly management accounts, year-end accounts, and supporting commentaries.
- Hands-on experience with revenue recognition, accrual accounting, and preparing P&L and balance sheet statements.
- Proven ability to perform detailed bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies across multiple accounts.
- Experience running accounts receivable reports, following up on outstanding balances, and managing credit memos.
- Demonstrated experience in payroll preparation and processing, including associated monthly and annual reporting.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and building or using models to forecast financial data.
- Experience with QuickBooks for financial data extraction and journal entry posting.
- Experience with SAGE ERP systems (Sage 50 and/or Sage 200).
- Strong forecasting and budgeting experience, including cash flow forecasting over both short-term (13-week) and annual horizons.
- Ability to analyze business KPIs and project or contract performance, translating data into actionable insights.
- Proven track record of improving financial controls, reconciliations, and process documentation.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a small, growing team and handle a broad range of finance and operational tasks.
- High level of adaptability and comfort working under pressure while switching between multiple tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience implementing or transitioning ERP systems, particularly moving from QuickBooks to Sage ERP.
- Experience managing or overseeing IT-related finance systems, controls, and procedures.
- Prior involvement in external financial audits, including preparation of schedules and managing auditor queries.
- Experience delivering financial training or coaching to non-finance colleagues.
- Background in improving costing methodologies by working cross-functionally to understand cost drivers.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a business partner to Senior leadership, providing insight and challenge to support decision-making.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment where team members support each other across different areas.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle both strategic responsibilities and day-to-day transactional tasks.

Work Environment
This role is based in an office environment with a small, close-knit team of approximately nine people, where everyone contributes across different areas as needed. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position is preferably fully onsite, though a hybrid arrangement of three days per week onsite may be possible for the right person. You will work extensively with financial systems such as QuickBooks and SAGE ERP (Sage 50 and Sage 200), as well as Microsoft Excel for reporting and forecasting. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Glen Allen, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $47.00/hr.
