Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a specialization in HVAC systems to join their growing engineering team in Bloemfontein, Free State, ZA. The successful candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, design, development, and testing of innovative HVAC solutions for a variety of applications. This role requires a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and a strong background in HVAC design software. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver, capable of leading complex projects from inception to completion and ensuring optimal system performance, efficiency, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning components and integrated solutions.
  • Utilize CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA) to create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, and schematics for HVAC components and assemblies.
  • Perform complex engineering calculations and simulations, including thermal analysis, fluid dynamics (CFD), and stress analysis, to optimize designs.
  • Specify materials, components, and manufacturing processes for HVAC systems, ensuring compliance with performance requirements and cost targets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, electrical engineering, product management, and project management, to ensure seamless product integration and successful project execution.
  • Develop and execute rigorous testing protocols for HVAC systems and components, analyzing results and implementing design improvements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues that arise during product development, manufacturing, or field operation.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including design specifications, bill of materials (BOMs), technical reports, and user manuals.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in HVAC technology, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design technicians.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes and methodologies.
  • Manage project timelines and budgets for assigned design projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. A Master's degree is a significant advantage.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical design engineering, with a strong focus on HVAC systems design.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design of air handling units, chillers, boilers, heat exchangers, ductwork, and control systems.
  • Proficiency in advanced CAD software for 3D modeling and 2D drafting, and experience with simulation tools (FEA, CFD).
  • In-depth knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and psychrometrics.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards and codes (e.g., ASHRAE, SANS).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to tackle complex engineering challenges.
  • Excellent leadership, project management, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Proficiency in project management software is desirable.
