About the role
Our client, a leader in advanced robotics and automation solutions, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a specialization in robotics. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, combining the benefits of remote work with essential on-site collaboration at our cutting-edge facilities. You will be responsible for the end-to-end mechanical design of robotic systems, from concept generation through to production. This includes designing robotic arms, end-effectors, mobile platforms, and associated mechanical components, ensuring precision, reliability, and performance. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of kinematics, dynamics, materials science, and manufacturing processes relevant to robotics. You will work closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and control systems specialists to deliver integrated robotic solutions.
Responsibilities: Lead the mechanical design of complex robotic systems, including manipulators, actuators, sensors, and structural components. Develop detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings using industry-standard software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD Inventor). Perform kinematic and dynamic analysis of robotic mechanisms. Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes for robotic components, considering factors like strength, weight, and cost. Collaborate with electrical and software engineering teams to integrate mechanical designs with electronic and control systems. Conduct design reviews, perform FEA simulations, and resolve design challenges to ensure robustness and performance. Oversee prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs. Contribute to the development of design standards and best practices within the engineering team. Mentor junior mechanical engineers and provide technical guidance. Stay current with advancements in robotics technology, materials, and manufacturing techniques. Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in mechanical design, with at least 4 years specifically in robotics or automated systems. Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). Strong understanding of robotics principles, kinematics, dynamics, and control systems. Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and other simulation tools. Knowledge of various manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, 3D printing, injection molding). Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Strong communication and teamwork abilities. Experience working in a hybrid or remote team environment is a plus. Contribute to the forefront of automation and robotics at our facility near Upington, Northern Cape, ZA .
