Our client, a major player in the chemical manufacturing industry, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to join their dedicated operations team. This is an on-site position crucial for ensuring the safety and integrity of our chemical processing facilities. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive process safety programs to prevent accidents, minimize risks, and ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, hazard analysis techniques, and safety management systems. You will lead risk assessments, conduct safety audits, investigate incidents, and develop corrective actions to enhance overall safety performance. Your expertise will be vital in fostering a strong safety culture and protecting our workforce and the environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement robust process safety management (PSM) programs in compliance with national and international standards.
- Conduct comprehensive Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, HAZID, and LOPA studies.
- Identify potential hazards and risks associated with chemical processes and equipment.
- Develop and implement safeguards and mitigation strategies to control identified risks.
- Perform safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations.
- Investigate process safety incidents, near misses, and deviations to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments for safety instrumented systems.
- Prepare and review Management of Change (MOC) documentation to ensure safety is considered in all process modifications.
- Develop and deliver process safety training to operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel.
- Contribute to the design and review of new process installations and modifications from a safety perspective.
- Maintain accurate records of safety assessments, training, and incident investigations.
- Champion a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements and regulatory changes in process safety engineering.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in process safety engineering within the chemical or petrochemical industry.
- In-depth knowledge of PSM elements, hazard analysis techniques, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Experience with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and SIL determination.
- Proficiency in relevant safety software and simulation tools.
- Strong understanding of relevant safety regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, CCPS guidelines).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent certification is highly desirable.
This role requires the candidate to be based in Queenstown, Eastern Cape, ZA.
