About the role

About

SteerAI is an autonomous mobility technology company powered by VentureOne, the commercialization arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council.

SteerAI’s advanced AI-powered autonomy stack, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute, empowers the logistics and defense industries by turning industrial vehicles into autonomous powerhouses that can handle complex off-road missions, transforming operations and protecting organizations' most important assets: Their workforce.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior UI/UX Designer with deep expertise in human factors, UX research, and the design of mission-critical systems. The successful candidate will lead the design of our next-generation defence Fleet Management System (FMS), a real-time command, control, and monitoring platform used by operators in mission critical environments.

This role requires a designer who can excel in complex system design, high-cognitive-load decision environments, and research conducted in the field. You will serve as a key enabler for the operator experience and will define the interaction models, workflows, and design principles that ensure safe, clear, and intuitive operation of the system under all conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Design intuitive, scalable UI systems, grounded in human factors, cognitive psychology, and operator ergonomics, that support complex, mission critical workflows.
  • Set and evolve the design vision, ensuring a consistent, user-centered experience across all touchpoints.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to deeply understand user needs, contexts, and mental models.
  • Apply human factors principles, including situational awareness and cognitive load considerations, to guide product design decisions.
  • Proactively identify UX risks and champion a culture of continuous discovery during the product development process, integrating user feedback, field observations, and usage data to advocate for strong user outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of design, product vision, and technical feasibility.
  • Build and maintain a design system optimized for defence interfaces, including data‑dense displays, alert hierarchies, geospatial layouts, and mission timelines across the FMS platform.
  • Influence product strategy through a deep understanding of user needs, operational workflows, and system behaviour.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience designing user interfaces for complex software systems, ideally in defence, enterprise, or mission-critical environments.
  • Background in Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Human-Centered Design, or related disciplines.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating clear thinking and excellent execution across data-rich, workflow-heavy, or real-time interfaces
  • Ability to translate complex system behaviour into clear visual language and intuitive interaction model
  • Strong collaboration skills. Comfortable working with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to align design with product strategy
  • Experience with tools commonly used by product design organisations, including Figma and Miro.

Nice to have

  • Experience with software tools that support real-time operations, logistics, or vehicle/asset coordination.
  • Background in Human-Centered Design or UX research
