About the role

Senior Software Developer — Remote

Department: Operations & Technology Reports To: VP of Operations Employment Type: Full-Time, W-2 | Exempt Location: Remote (U.S.)

About Xterra Health

Xterra Health is a veteran-focused medical consulting firm based in Salem, Ohio. We help veterans navigate the VA disability claims process by providing nexus letters and disability benefits questionnaires (DBQs) through a network of 40+ independent medical providers. Our mission is straightforward: make sure every veteran who deserves benefits can access them.

We are growing fast — and we need our technology to grow with us.

The Role

We are hiring a Senior Software Developer to own the technical infrastructure behind Xterra's clinical operations, provider network, and payment workflows. This is a high-ownership individual contributor role reporting directly to the VP of Operations.

You will build systems that do not yet exist, migrate platforms actively in use, and serve as Xterra's internal expert on applying technology to real operational problems. As we scale toward 10,000+ monthly appointments, your mandate is clear: eliminate the manual bottlenecks holding us back.

If you want a pre-built backlog and a clear roadmap handed to you, this is not that role. If you want to own the whole stack and see your work make a direct impact on veterans' lives, keep reading.

What You'll Own

CRM & Platform Administration

• Own Xterra's GoHighLevel (GHL) implementation end-to-end — scheduling, calendar management, workflow automation, and API integrations

• Migrate off third-party GHL vendors and bring platform expertise fully in-house

• Extend and deepen existing configurations as we grow beyond our Acuity/Squarespace origin

Billing, Invoicing & Payment Automation

• Design and build an automated billing pipeline connecting letter finalization, invoice generation, payment confirmation, and provider compensation

• Eliminate manual reconciliation steps currently handled by Accounting

• Build exception-based reporting so the Accounting team gets flags, not data entry work

Provider Operations Infrastructure

• Automate provider activity monitoring and inactivity flags tied to contract terms

• Build credentialing file tracking with automated expiration alerts across licenses and agreements

• Enhance the provider onboarding portal to support growth without proportional increases in manual effort

Internal Tooling & AI Integration

• Build internal tools that leverage AI to accelerate clinical workflows and operations

• Replace shared credential vulnerabilities in current AI tooling with provider-level access controls and audit logging

• Develop executive dashboards giving leadership real-time visibility into provider activity, appointment volume, and revenue

Systems Integration

• Connect GHL, payroll, Microsoft 365, the provider onboarding hub, and the letter portal into a coherent operational stack

• Own the API layer between external platforms and internal workflows

• Document all systems and integrations for continuity and future team growth

What We're Looking For

Required

• 5+ years of professional software development experience

• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Node.js, or similar)

• Solid working knowledge of REST APIs and webhooks

• Demonstrated experience integrating third-party platforms via API — CRMs, payment processors, scheduling tools, or similar

• Experience building internal automation and operational tooling, not just end-user applications

• Ability to work independently, own projects from scoping through deployment, and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders

Preferred

• Hands-on GoHighLevel (GHL) experience — workflow automation, calendar configuration, API integration

• Experience applying AI tools (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar) to internal workflow automation

• Familiarity with healthcare operations, HIPAA-adjacent environments, or compliance requirements

• Experience building dashboards and reporting tools for non-technical users

• Prior experience in a high-growth, resource-constrained environment

• Military service or a connection to the veteran community

What to Expect

The first stretch is about getting familiar with the stack and partnering with the VP of Operations to identify and prioritize what gets built first. GHL ownership transfers fully to this role early on. Billing automation follows once the platform is stable. From there, the roadmap is yours to help shape.

This role suits someone who is energized by ambiguity, takes pride in clean systems, and wants their work to matter beyond the codebase.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: Competitive; details provided at time of offer

• Health Insurance: Medical, dental, and vision — Xterra covers 60% of employee premiums

• Paid Time Off: Accrued per company PTO policy

• 401(k): Eligible after 6 months; details provided at time of offer

• Location: Fully remote

Xterra Health is committed to supporting veterans through every step of their claims process. We build teams that reflect that mission.
