The Role
General Motors is on the lookout for a seasoned professional to enhance our team as a Senior Software Engineer, Engineering Improvement. What You'll Do
- Identify high-impact opportunities for enhancing engineering effectiveness through tools, workflows, and developer experience.
- Develop practical software solutions that simplify, unify, automate, and optimize software development processes.
- Collaborate closely with teams to understand their challenges and implement sustainable improvements.
- Enhance the usability, accuracy, and accessibility of engineering systems, dashboards, and self-service tools.
- Educate and empower partner teams to ensure the sustainability of improvements after initial implementation.
- Work autonomously, managing technical execution from inception to completion with minimal oversight.
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 10+ years of experience in professional software engineering.
- Proven ability to independently identify key technical challenges and implement effective solutions.
- Demonstrated success in building software, automation, platforms, or internal tools that enhance developer productivity and engineering workflows.
- Excellent problem-solving and systems thinking skills, with an ability to differentiate root causes from mere symptoms.
- Experience in influencing outcomes across teams without relying solely on formal authority.
- Passion for developing accurate, user-friendly systems creating a culture where the correct path is the easiest one.
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience in areas such as developer productivity, developer experience, platform engineering, or software engineering effectiveness.
- Knowledge of enhancing CI/CD processes, source control, build systems, testing workflows, release processes, or engineering automation.
- Expertise in designing or building dashboards, developer portals, workflow tools, or self-service platforms.
- Experience with improving tool adoption and effectiveness across multiple teams.
- Strong mentoring and coaching skills, particularly in helping teams develop the necessary skills for independent progress.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is between $160,200 and $265,000. Actual salaries may vary based on candidate qualifications.

Location Details
