At Coinbase, we are on a mission to enhance economic freedom worldwide. This is an ambitious journey that requires our best effort as we develop the next-generation onchain platform, shaping the future of the global financial system.
We are looking for someone very special—someone who is passionate about our mission and believes in the transformative power of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to revolutionize finance. If you're eager to leave your mark, thrive under pressure, and work alongside talented colleagues who expect excellence, this is your opportunity. We seek individuals who tackle challenging problems head-on and relish the opportunity to grow through feedback.
Our work culture is dynamic and not suited for everyone. But if you're eager to create the future with a team of high achievers, there's no better place for you.
About the FinOps Team
The FinOps team at Coinbase serves as the backbone of our infrastructure spending, connecting Engineering, Finance, and Product. We manage cost data across all product teams and work closely with our vendor partners to ensure that our financial data is accurate and reliable.
Key Responsibilities
- Fostering a FinOps Culture: We aim to integrate cost-awareness into daily engineering and product decisions through cross-functional collaboration, real-time visibility into cloud spending, and continuous education on cost versus value trade-offs. Our approach makes cost optimization an iterative process supported by data-driven practices and the right tools, helping Coinbase stay competitive.
- Managing Cost Allocation & Unit Economics: We oversee cost allocations across all Coinbase projects, ensuring that each team has a comprehensive understanding of their total costs. This allows leadership and engineering teams to make informed decisions regarding cost flow through our platforms.
- Creating the FinOps Hub: We are building a centralized FinOps Hub to provide a unified view of optimization efforts and cost data for our partner teams. This hub will help monitor resource utilization in real-time, enabling prompt reactions to cost fluctuations, whether due to unexpected spikes or planned architectural changes.
- Enhancing Visibility & Accountability: We deliver crucial insights to leadership about the financial implications of engineering decisions, fostering a culture of financial responsibility that helps teams evaluate the trade-offs between launching new features and maintaining infrastructure efficiency.
- Optimizing Vendor & Resource Usage: We work closely with vendors to refine contracts and empower engineering teams with the data necessary for resource optimization and waste elimination.
Job Duties
- Collaborate with Engineering and Finance leadership to create tools that provide real-time analyses of architectural decisions' financial impacts, helping teams balance feature delivery with infrastructure efficiency.
- Develop and maintain the essential features of our internal FinOps Hub, transforming raw cloud and vendor data into actionable insights for engineering teams.
- Oversee the integration of vendor billing APIs to ensure the accuracy and seamless flow of cost data into our allocation models.
What We Look For
- A deep, practical understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) and how various cloud services are provisioned, metered, and billed.
- Strong skills in backend software engineering (e.g., Go, Python, Ruby) with a proven track record of delivering high-quality, production-ready code.
- Analytical skills to investigate cost anomalies back to specific infrastructure changes, alongside excellent communication abilities to explain these technical factors to engineering and product teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the FinOps domain, cloud economics, or developing tools for infrastructure optimization.
- Background in creating internal developer tools, dashboards, or portals that drive engineering best practices.
- Relevant professional certifications in cloud architecture or cost management, such as FinOps Certified Practitioner or AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
