Senior Software Engineer II – App Observability Team
honeycomb.io
About the role
What We’re Building
Honeycomb is a service that defines observability and raises expectations of what developer tools can do. We work with well‑known companies such as Hello Fresh, Slack, Launch Darkly, and Vanguard across a range of industries. This is an exciting time in our trajectory; we’ve closed Series D funding, scaled past 200 people, and were named to Forbes’ America’s Best Startups of 2022 and 2023.
How We Work
We are a fully distributed company that values trust, autonomy, and accountability from Day 1. Our focus is on how you deliver rather than where you sit.
Little more about the team
As a Senior Software Engineer II on the App O11y team, you’ll help deliver the core observability capabilities that power Honeycomb. Your ownership spans querying, metrics, anomaly detection, and high‑level analysis – the foundational workflows customers use to bring telemetry into Honeycomb and investigate issues.
What you’ll do in the role
- Design, build, and deliver backend systems and APIs. Architect and implement APIs and backend services in Go, emphasizing clarity, maintainability, and backward compatibility. Think proactively about cost, scale, and risk.
- Build and maintain full‑stack product features. Contribute to frontend (React/Type Script) and backend (Go) code, delivering impactful features that add value for customers and the team.
- Provide technical leadership. Define patterns and operational guidelines. Plan, lead, and deliver complex, multi‑team projects, mentoring teammates along the way.
- Collaborate across disciplines. Work closely within a product triad model alongside design and product partners, iterating quickly based on user feedback and shaping technical roadmaps.
- Support and own your software in production. Participate in on‑call rotations to ensure reliable operations and address user pain points.
- Communicate clearly and multiply your impact. Mentor engineers, share knowledge, and delegate to help others grow.
What you’ll bring to the role
- Deep experience designing, building, and maintaining backend systems. Substantial expertise building APIs and backend services in Go (or similar languages), with strong opinions on API design, error handling, and developer experience.
- Frontend proficiency with React and Type Script. Professional experience delivering frontend features and contributing to full‑stack software.
- Experience leading complex technical projects. Planned and delivered projects spanning multiple teams or systems, navigating external dependencies and uncertainty.
- Ownership and autonomy. Proactively identify problems, propose solutions, and own projects end‑to‑end.
- A track record of making others better. Mentored engineers, led technical design reviews, and raised the quality bar for a team.
- A collaborative and flexible mindset. Comfortable working cross‑functionally, pivoting priorities to address evolving customer or business needs.
- Clear, open communication. Provide and receive feedback; think clearly and communicate regularly.
- An interest in observability and production culture. Supported software in production with strong opinions on how to do it well.
- Nice to have: experience with AI‑assisted development. Proficient with AI coding tools or excited to incorporate them into your workflow.
