The Reliability Engineering team plays a critical role in achieving our vision by assisting Coinbase engineering teams in developing software renowned for its reliability. As an integral service team, we work closely with engineering to incorporate industry best practices. Through education and advocacy, we aim to embed reliability within our engineering culture. We enhance other engineers’ capabilities by sharing knowledge, conducting proactive analyses, and improving processes, tools, and automation. Ultimately, we succeed when all engineering teams can independently build reliable software.

Responsibilities

• Enhance observability, reliability, and availability by defining and measuring key metrics.
• Develop automation solutions to eliminate toil and operations work.
• Work with our core infrastructure team to optimize and performance‑tune our cloud deployments (Think Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, EC2, etc.).
• Collaborate with product teams to minimize service disruptions and automate incident responses.
• Identify and analyze reliability issues across various business units and technology stacks, then design and implement solutions for substantial improvements.
• Educate and mentor the engineering team to uphold reliability as a core value in our engineering culture.
• Write high‑quality, well‑tested code that meets the needs of our customers.
• Tackle and debug complex technical problems, improving systems and products for easier deployment, ownership, operation, and diagnosis.
• Review all feature designs in your product area and across projects for comprehensive insights.
• Own the security, safety, scale, operational integrity, and architectural clarity of designs.
• Build integration pipelines for third‑party vendors.
• Participate in on‑call support rotations to swiftly address urgent issues.

Requirements (What we look for in you)

• 6+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience in designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services with a solid grasp of service‑oriented architecture.
• Ability to write high‑quality, well‑tested code that meets customer needs.
• Strong passion for creating an open financial system that unites people globally.
• Robust technical skills in system design and coding.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a commitment to transparency.
• Strong skills in observability, debugging, and performance tuning.
• Ability to clearly and simply explain complex technical concepts.
• Interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with engineers of all levels.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and composure under pressure.
• A willingness to engage with and improve any layer of the technology stack.
• This role requires on‑call availability for quick issue resolution outside of regular business hours.

Nice to haves

• Experience building reliable systems that handle high throughput and low latency.
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools like Kibana, Datadog, etc.
• Experience in fast‑paced growth environments.
• Knowledge of Ruby, Go, and Terraform.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.
• Experience crafting reliable systems.
• Background in regulated environments.
• Experience in creating company‑facing blog posts and training materials.
• Familiarity with crypto, including Ethereum interactions, ENS usage, and blockchain services.

Compensation

Pay Transparency Notice: The target annual base salary for this role may range from $186,065 to $218,900 USD, depending on your work location. Total compensation may also include equity, bonuses, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
