Sr. Staff Accountant Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Staff Accountant to support the financial operations of a fast-paced construction company. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for assisting with general accounting functions, job cost tracking, accounts payable and receivable, month-end close activities, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, experience working in the construction industry or project-based accounting environment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
- Prepare journal entries and assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Process accounts payable invoices, subcontractor payments, and vendor reconciliations.
- Assist with accounts receivable functions including customer billing, collections, and cash application.
- Support job cost accounting by reviewing and tracking project costs, labor allocations, and subcontractor expenses.
- Assist with preparation of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and project profitability reporting.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Review employee expense reports and ensure compliance with company policies.
- Assist with payroll processing and related reporting, as needed.
- Support annual audits and provide requested documentation to external auditors and tax preparers.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with company procedures and accounting standards.
- Collaborate with project managers and operations personnel to resolve accounting and cost-related issues.
- Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred but not required.
- 4–6 years of accounting experience preferred.
- Construction industry accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of job costing and construction financial reporting preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
- Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems such as Sage, Foundation, Viewpoint, or similar platforms preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Skills
- Understanding of AIA billing and subcontractor compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with lien waivers, certified payroll, and retainage tracking.
- Experience working with multi-entity or project-based accounting structures.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
Work Environment
- Primarily office-based environment with occasional interaction with project teams.
- Standard business hours with additional time required during month-end close or peak project activity periods.
