Our company, Hogrefe Digital Solutions GmbH, develops the Hogrefe Test System (HTS), a web platform for comprehensive psychological online assessments, and employs more than 60 people. Our testing methods help, for example, to diagnose learning difficulties in children early on, they are used in HR for aptitude diagnostics, or they support psychological professionals in accompanying people with mental illnesses on their path to recovery.

We are looking for an experienced Senior System Operations Engineer (m/f/d) with strong expertise in infrastructure and DevOps to strengthen our team. The position can also be filled on a part-time basis. In this role, you will take on a central position in ensuring stable and secure operations while actively driving improvements to our infrastructure and delivery processes. You will play an important role in the further development of our infrastructure and operations approach – with a focus on automation, standardization, and long-term maintainability. The position offers you the opportunity to actively shape how we operate and develop our infrastructure by contributing your experience and driving meaningful improvements.

Responsibilities

Technical Operations & Platform Ownership

  • Operation and continuous improvement of a Linux-based infrastructure
  • Ensuring reliable platform operation in daily business (monitoring, incident analysis, rapid recovery)
  • Planning, coordination, and monitoring of deployments in multiple environments
  • Ensuring data availability and supporting disaster recovery and business continuity processes
  • Further development of the infrastructure with a focus on reducing operational complexity
  • Ensuring reproducible and maintainable system operation

Automation & Continuous Improvement

  • Driving automation and Infrastructure as Code to improve reliability, reproducibility, and efficiency
  • Systematic reduction of manual activities through automation and standardization
  • Further development towards consistent and scalable infrastructure and delivery processes across all engineering teams

Technical Contribution & Alignment

  • Shaping the technical direction of our infrastructure and operations landscape
  • Definition and establishment of standards for automation, deployment, and system design
  • Making pragmatic architectural decisions in a complex, evolving environment
  • Evaluation and management of infrastructural decisions (e.g., tools, architecture, deployment models)
  • Balancing short-term requirements and long-term modernization
  • Technical point of contact for complex infrastructure topics within the team

Collaboration & Security

  • Close collaboration with software development, product management, and QA
  • Promoting effective collaboration on infrastructure and operations topics
  • Strengthening system security in a data-sensitive environment
  • Participation in on-call duties and coordination of incident responses

Qualifications

Experience & Mindset

  • Several years of professional experience in system operations, infrastructure, or DevOps
  • Proven leadership experience or technical leadership of technical topics, projects, or initiatives
  • Very good communication skills in German and English, both written and spoken
  • Ability to take responsibility for complex topics and implement them
  • Experience in dynamic, changing environments
  • High degree of personal responsibility, reliability, and conscientiousness
  • Experience in regulated environments (e.g., ISO standards) is an advantage

Practical experience in several of the following areas (not necessarily all):

  • Linux-based server environments
  • Application platforms and web/application servers
  • Container technologies and modern deployment approaches
  • Databases (relational and/or non-relational), ideally MariaDB or comparable
  • Monitoring, logging, and alerting systems
  • Fundamentals of network technology (e.g., DNS, routing, firewalls)
  • Reverse proxies and load balancing
  • Tools for configuration management, orchestration, or automation, e.g., Terraform, Ansible
  • Version control systems
  • Virtualized or cloud-based infrastructures
