Introduction

Giant IT is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer (Tier 3) to join our growing technical team in Durban, Westville.

This role is ideal for a highly skilled IT Infrastructure Engineer / Network Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working hands-on with enterprise systems in a fast-paced Managed Services Provider (MSP) environment.

You will act as the highest technical escalation point, leading infrastructure projects and ensuring mission-critical systems remain secure, stable, and optimised.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Systems Engineer / Tier 3 Engineer, you will play a critical role in maintaining and improving complex IT environments.

Your responsibilities will include: • Acting as the Tier 3 escalation point for complex infrastructure, network, and security issues • Diagnosing root causes of system failures rather than applying temporary workarounds • Designing and implementing enterprise infrastructure solutions • Performing advanced troubleshooting across servers, networks, virtualisation, and cloud platforms • Executing infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and remediation projects • Implementing and testing backup and disaster recovery strategies • Designing high-availability and failover environments • Producing accurate technical documentation for infrastructure systems • Mentoring junior engineers and sharing technical expertise • Communicating complex technical solutions clearly to clients

Required Experience • 8+ years experience in IT infrastructure and network engineering • Proven Tier 3 support experience in an MSP or enterprise environment • Demonstrated history of owning and delivering infrastructure projects • Strong ability to design, implement, troubleshoot, and optimise complex IT environments independently

This role requires deep hands-on technical expertise and real-world experience managing production environments.

Technical Skills (Hands-On Experience Required)

Windows Server & Active Directory • Designing and managing complex Active Directory environments • Advanced experience with GPOs, DNS, replication, trusts, and permissions • Troubleshooting authentication and directory services issues

Microsoft 365 & Azure • Administration of Microsoft 365 environments, including: • Exchange Online • Entra ID (Azure AD) • Intune • Managing Azure infrastructure, including VMs, networking, identity and security • Troubleshooting tenant-wide issues and configuration problems

Virtualisation • Strong experience with VMware or Hyper-V environments • Performance tuning, storage troubleshooting, and high-availability configurations

Networking • Hands-on experience with: • VLANs • VPNs • Routing and switching • Firewall configuration • Ability to diagnose complex multi-layer network issues

Backup & Disaster Recovery • Implementation and testing of backup and disaster recovery solutions • Experience performing real-world system restores

Firewalls • Configuration and troubleshooting of FortiGate or Sophos firewalls • Managing security policies, VPNs, and firewall rules
