Work Schedule

We offer a hybrid 3‑2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Dominion Energy’s Substation Engineering department is seeking an experienced technical and project lead for the design and implementation of Electric Transmission and Distribution Substations projects. This work supports the company’s Transmissions and Distribution growth plans and includes larger‑scale projects requiring diverse engineering knowledge. The position will be responsible for the conceptual design, scope of work, and estimates for Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution Substations ranging from 4 kV to 765 kV.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptual design of Electrical Utility Substations for new construction and upgrades.
  • Coordinate input from a multi‑disciplined project team (substation, system protection, planning, transmission line, distribution, construction, operation, civil/structural, permitting, real estate) and define the project scope.
  • Create and/or modify Substation physical design drawings, including conceptual one‑line diagrams and General Arrangements.
  • Create project cost estimates using material and labor costing databases for the physical portion of projects.
  • Update the database to improve accuracy and consistency.
  • Develop Conceptual Engineering Scope/Estimate Packages and support Project Managers to take proposed projects through the approval process.
  • Facilitate smooth transition of the conceptual design to detail engineering and implementation teams.
  • Provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed; assist less experienced engineers and technicians in conceptual engineering, detail engineering, and the field.
  • Participate in site visits to support the construction group and/or asset owners.
  • Represent the company at state and county commission applications/hearings and community open houses.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Senior Engineer: Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience (Substation applications) or demonstrated equivalent.

Staff Engineer: Minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience (Substation applications) or demonstrated equivalent.

Engineering Technical Specialist III: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (Substation applications) and demonstrated competencies in an applicable discipline.

  • Thorough understanding of substation components and their functions.
  • Firm understanding of physical design principles for major substation equipment, transmission lines, and distribution feeder configurations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and modify one‑line diagrams, substation plan, and elevation drawings.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is preferred.
  • Analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Planning, organizational, and project‑management skills.
  • Self‑motivated and able to work cooperatively in a team, while also working independently.
  • Ability to process information quickly and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong time‑management skills with independent planning and organization.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Education Requirements

For placement in the Engineer job series:

  • Possess a 4‑year Engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited program (based on the year of accreditation) or equivalent.
  • Possess a 4‑year degree from an institution outside the U.S. accredited by the country’s engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord, recognized by the accrediting body on or after the date the country became a full signatory.
  • Possess a 4‑year degree in Engineering (non‑ABET), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post‑graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree is ABET‑accredited.
  • Hold or have previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

For placement in the Engineering Technical Specialist job series:

  • 4‑year Engineering Technology degree or 4‑year degree in Engineering (not ABET‑accredited);
  • 4‑year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or another technical related discipline;
  • 4‑year non‑technical degree and post‑graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET‑accredited);
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a preferred degree.

Licenses, Certifications, or Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
