The Role

At General Motors, we empower passionate and innovative Product Managers to tackle complex customer and business challenges. Our ideal team members excel at collaboration within product management, program management, design, and engineering teams to create impactful solutions. We hold our teams to high standards and seek leaders who can effectively influence colleagues, stakeholders, and executives through data-driven insights.

As the Product Manager for Super Cruise AV HMI, you will lead the development of next-generation interactions in autonomous vehicle driving. You will be responsible for shaping the roadmap for the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) ecosystem, enabling drivers to transition safely and confidently between manual and autonomous driving modes. Your work will encompass various aspects, including visual displays, non-visual feedback (audio and haptics), environmental visuals, and personalized driver preferences.

To thrive in this role, a unique combination of technical knowledge in embedded software/hardware, along with a deep empathy for the user experience, is required. This position demands navigating the critical balance between safety-oriented systems and premium consumer experiences, where you will make strategic trade-offs between feature complexity and cognitive load.

Responsibilities

  • Define the long-term vision and roadmap for Super Cruise HMI, ensuring a seamless and trust-building experience across all interfaces such as clusters, HUDs, and infotainment screens.
  • Develop strategies for visual cues (lighting and UI) and non-visual cues (spatial audio and haptics) to facilitate clear communication of system status and driver expectations.
  • Oversee the transitions between manual and autonomous states, specifying requirements for engagement, disengagement, and takeover requests where timing and clarity are crucial.
  • Lead the design of how the vehicle conveys its perception of the environment, transforming complex sensor data into intuitive 3D visualizations that enhance driver confidence.
  • Create a customizable ecosystem for driver preferences, ensuring that the HMI adapts to individual needs while upholding safety standards and brand integrity.
  • Serve as the primary liaison among Human Factors, Design, Software, and Safety teams to confirm HMI requirements are both practical and robust.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs for HMI effectiveness, including driver response times, system trust scores, and engagement metrics.
  • Communicate the HMI strategy and progress effectively to executive leadership, ensuring alignment on how users will engage with our products.

Requirements

  • 3+ years (Senior) or 5+ years (Staff) experience in product management or a related field.
  • Deep understanding of HMI software frameworks, UI stacks, or embedded systems, including knowledge of automotive hardware constraints regarding latency and reliability.
  • Strong analytical skills to derive actionable insights from user research, simulator studies, and fleet data analysis.
  • Adept at translating complex autonomous driving concepts into intuitive consumer-focused value propositions and clear engineering specifications.
  • Comfortable navigating the complexities of autonomy regulations and the evolving HMI landscape.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Doctorate degree in a relevant field.
  • Direct experience in shipping ADAS/AV systems.
  • Understanding of human cognitive load, situational awareness, and the psychology of trust related to automated systems.
  • Experience in launching products that require close integration between custom hardware (sensors, steering wheels, light bars) and software UI.

Hybrid/Remote

This role allows for remote work; however, if you reside within a 50-mile radius of Austin, Detroit, Warren, Pontiac, or Milford, you are expected to work onsite at least three times a week.

Compensation

The compensation details are based on what a successful applicant might be offered in compliance with applicable state laws. The salary range for this role is $106,600 to $245,000, with the final offer depending on various factors relevant to the position.

  • Bonus Potential: An incentive program is available and is based on company performance, job level, and individual contributions.

Benefits

  • GM provides a broad range of health and well-being benefits, including medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, and more.

Company Vehicle (Staff level only)

Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report, you will have the opportunity to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, where you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and assess.
