Ingénieur scientifique contractuel
Inria
About the role
About the center or functional department
The Inria research centre in Lyon is the 9th Inria research centre, formally created in January 2022. It brings together approximately 300 people in 16 research teams and research support services.
Its staff are distributed at this stage on 2 campuses: in Villeurbanne La Doua (Centre / INSA Lyon / UCBL) on the one hand, and Lyon Gerland (ENS de Lyon) on the other.
The Lyon centre is active in the fields of software, distributed and high-performance computing, embedded systems, quantum computing and privacy in the digital world, but also in digital health and computational biology.
Context and advantages of the position
CorteXlab, now part of the SLICES european platform, is an experimental testbed dedicated to radio communication research, specifically designed for Software Defined Radio experiments. It is hosted in the CITI lab (https://www.citi-lab.fr/), INSA Lyon. With its 180m² EM shielded room that ensures experiment reproducibility and its 40 high-end SDR-capable radio nodes, CorteXlab provides a unique setup to experiment on new state-of-the-art radio techniques.
The PEPR project is a French-wide initiative to fund research for innovative technologies. Specifically, the Future Networks (Reseaux du Futur) aims to develop new technologies that will push the next generation of radio networks into the future, making France a competitive actor in this domain.
The PC3 (Perseus) of PEPR NF aims to create new techologies that abstract the concepts of cells to create a region-wide MIMO layer. The recruited radio engineer will work hand in hand with PC3 researchers to implement the developed algorithms into experimental tests, validations and proofs-of-concept that will test the usage and illustrate the performance of these algorithms.
Mission assigned
The recruited engineer will be part of the CorteXlab team of four people, which gathers both radio communication and signal processing specialists, as well as development / system / network engineers.
They will work under the supervision of researchers (creators of the algorithms) and engineers (experts on the usage of the testbed), to translate mathematical concepts into an implementation.
They will have to be able to speak in equal terms with both the researchers, who usually develop their algorithms in theory and simulations, and also the engineers, who are concerned mainly with the implementation details.
The aim of the proposed work is to allow researchers to conduct innovating scientific experiments in CorteXlab in alignment with the objectives of the PC3 part of the PEPR project.
Main activities
The main activities resolves around defining and implementing experimental scenarios for the PC3 experiments/demos/proofs-of-concept. This includes:
- Reading scientific papers, understand the algorithms proposed
- Defining experimental scenarios in which these algorithms are relevant to be put to the test
- Designing software solutions that implement these target algorithms
- Implementing them in a setting convenient to the experimental facilities
- Understanding how to evaluate their performance and evaluate them
- Maintaining existing experimental frameworks relevant to the needs of PC3
- Contributing to the maintenance or creation of Docker images providing the software stack for running these experiments
- Interacting with the users of the platform concerned with these experiments to understand their needs and provide help and support
- Writing and/or maintaining documentation, including scientific publications
Skills
- Telecommunications and signal processing background
- Good programming skills in Python, C++, or alternatively very good skills in other programming languages ensuring a quick adaptation to the development environment
- GNU Radio knowledge is a plus
