The Center for IT and Media Management (ZIM) at the University of Potsdam invites applications for the following 3-year fixed-term position, to be filled as soon as possible:

AI Software Engineer (f/m/d) with Focus on Administrative AI Technologies

The successful candidate will work 40 hours per week (100 %). The position is classified within remuneration group 13 of the collective wage agreement among the German federal states (“Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder" - TV-L).

Your Field of Work

The Center for IT and Media Management (ZIM) is the central partner for information and communication technologies as well as multimedia production at the University of Potsdam. ZIM provides needs-based infrastructures, solutions, and consulting services to support the requirements of teaching, studies, research, and university administration. Our mission is to support excellent teaching and research through outstanding services. The position is assigned to the ZIM management as a staff role.

The Scope of Your Responsibilities

  • Technical exploration, implementation, testing, and documentation of pilot scenarios for the application of AI technologies in studies, teaching, and administration: Empirically grounded requirements analysis to identify the needs of specific academic disciplines and administrative units; technical consulting for lecturers on implementation options for specific use cases, including raising awareness of data protection and ethical perspectives.
  • Monitoring of global AI developments related to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs): Conducting online and literature research and analyzing research articles, professional journals, conference reports, and other sources; the monitoring focus will be on offerings and developments in the market for AI-based educational technologies, services, and administrative AI technologies; risk analysis and compliance: assessing risks associated with the use of AI technologies in education and administration, e.g., with regard to legal and ethical perspectives.
  • Identification of the technical prerequisites for the sustainable implementation of AI technologies for studies, teaching, and administration within the university infrastructure: Interfaces for interoperability with the existing university infrastructure: technical specification (e.g., identifying the data to be transferred, required actions and functions, as well as supporting protocols and standards) and technical implementation (e.g., adapting interfaces); technical implementation of AI technologies for teaching, studies, and administration within the existing university infrastructure: evaluation and selection of AI technologies, frameworks, and platforms based on the results of the conducted exploration and testing; consideration of data protection and security.

Your Qualifications

  • Completed academic university degree (Diploma, Master's, Magister, or State Examination), preferably in a computer science-related field or in educational, social, or administrative sciences, or in a comparable, relevant field of study
  • Understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
  • Knowledge in specific AI application areas such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Natural Language Generation (NLG)

We are also looking for the following competences:

  • Experience in contributing to academic higher-education projects (e.g., BMFTR, DFG, STIHL)
  • Knowledge of classical programming languages and no-code environments, e.g., Python, R, Microsoft Azure AI Studio, RapidMiner, Dataiku, etc.
  • Methodological and statistical competencies (e.g., for analytics)
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Microsoft Azure
  • German language proficiency at the A2 level according to the CEFR; English language proficiency at the B2 level
