AI Engineer
Lextract
About the role
About Lextract
Lextract is redefining how legal due diligence is done. We combine deep legal expertise with cutting-edge GenAI and secure, EU-hosted infrastructure to automate and accelerate M&A transactions — giving lawyers time to think, not just review. Our platform reduces manual review effort by up to 80% while increasing consistency and quality in due diligence workflows. We are built specifically for European transaction practice — not as a generic AI layer, but as an end-to-end solution tailored to how M&A lawyers actually work. We're a growing team, backed by angel investors from top-tier law firms and technology companies, with a strong partner network across Europe's legal ecosystem.
The role
You'll architect and scale the AI systems at the heart of Lextract's due diligence platform — working at the intersection of LLM pipelines, agentic workflows, and the backend infrastructure that holds it all together. This is a unique opportunity to push how legal documents are processed, analyzed, and understood at scale. We're looking for someone with strong classical software engineering fundamentals and a real, hands-on grasp of what does and doesn't work when building with LLMs.
The technical challenges:
- Building the full legal due diligence pipeline: from multi-approach retrieval (RAG, graph-based, and beyond) to deep per-document and cross-document analysis across diverse data formats
- Designing source referencing systems for full traceability — lawyers need to trust the output, and that means knowing exactly where every insight comes from
- Architecting secure, scalable APIs and data infrastructure that handle large document volumes while keeping performance tight and access controlled
- Solving the hard evaluation problem: we measure what we ship, and measuring quality in a deep, variable, domain-specific pipeline is a real challenge in itself
Our stack
- Backend: Python (FastAPI), PostgreSQL
- Frontend: Next.js, React, TypeScript
- LLM & AI: Agentic frameworks, RAG pipelines
- Infra & DevOps: Docker, Azure, Terraform
You might be a fit if…
- You have at least 3 years of full-time backend engineering experience with strong Python proficiency
- You've gone deep on LLMs — in a professional setting, through significant side projects, or both — and can speak credibly to retrieval design, prompting, evaluation, and agentic patterns
- You're comfortable with cloud infrastructure (Azure / AWS / GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- You bring a zero-trust security mindset: up to date with auth, secure cloud, and data protection best practices
Bonus
- Frontend experience with TypeScript / React / Next.js
- Experience with document processing workflows
What we offer
- A growing team with deep product, legal, and tech expertise — focused, dynamic, and shipping fast
- Early-stage opportunity with competitive compensation and equity options
- Onsite from our Munich office, working closely with the team day to day
- Ownership and clarity: end-to-end responsibility for features, minimal dependencies, fast decisions
