About the Role

We are building the next‑generation AI‑powered platform and web application for easy and fast creation of audio and video content. Building a revolutionary way to record, transcribe, edit, and mix audio and video on the web comes with a series of unique technical challenges and requires solving hard and complex problems.

We are looking for an experienced software engineer to build a best‑in‑class video editing and streaming platform to power the core editing and AI functionality of the app.

About the Team

Descript’s editor product makes the creation of high‑quality video and audio content accessible to anyone. The product, which was originally geared towards podcasters, has grown into a broad suite of editing tools that support a wide range of use cases. The Editor team is responsible for building the product experiences that will continue to expand the capabilities of the editing experience and enable even more people to experience the ease and joy of producing content with Descript.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional full‑stack software engineering experience.
• Expertise in TypeScript, React, and RESTful APIs.
• Solid CS fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, databases (Postgres, Redis).
• Experience building creative tools in the past or frequent use of creative media tools.
• A desire to have a high degree of ownership and accountability.
• Deep understanding of system design principles and ability to integrate customer needs into decisions.
• Ability to thrive in collaborative environments, working with product, design, research, and AI engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Build traditional editing functionality (e.g., timeline editing, effects & animations).
• Integrate in‑house (e.g., studio audio) and third‑party AI functionality to supercharge users’ ability to create excellent video and audio content.
• Support the data model and systems that manage the state of projects across clients.
• Build media management features that enable organizations to collaborate on Descript as a team.

Compensation

The base salary range for this role is $193,000 – $250,000 per year. Final offer amounts will consider prior experience, expertise, location, and other factors.
