TRACE Fellowship | Backend Engineer | Funded | Remote

Farmily

About the role

About TRACE

TRACE is building the verified data infrastructure that makes African agricultural exports audit-ready for EU markets. EUDR enforcement lands December 2026. The exporters who cannot prove GPS-verified, smallholder-level compliance lose market access. TRACE is the infrastructure that prevents that.

We are hiring three engineers into a six-month funded fellowship. This is the backend seat.

What you'll build

The core data infrastructure of TRACE. The pipelines, APIs, and services that ingest GPS farm data, validate it, structure it into Digital Passports, and push it to exporters, EU buyers, and EU regulatory systems.

You will own:

  • FastAPI service development for farmer data ingestion and validation
  • Digital Passport generation logic and data structuring
  • EUDR Due Diligence Statement formatting and TRACES NT submission pipeline
  • Webhook and event-driven architecture for compliance status updates
  • Audit trail logging and data integrity checks
  • API endpoints consumed by the frontend and future Enterprise API clients

Stack: Python · FastAPI · PostgreSQL · Redis · AWS or GCP

What we're looking for

1–2 years of Python backend experience. At least one production or near-production API built and called by someone else.

Hard requirements:

  • FastAPI or Flask proficiency
  • GitHub fluency — branching, PRs, code review (non-negotiable)
  • Understanding of data validation, error handling, and API security basics
  • Working knowledge of at least one AI coding tool

You will not advance if you have never deliberately handled error states, or if you treat database schema design as an afterthought.

Fellowship terms

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Stipend: $100/month (USD) or NGN 150,000/month for Nigeria-based candidates
  • One fully equipped Lagos co-working seat awarded to the strongest Lagos-based candidate
  • Bi-weekly 1:1s with our CTO + async code review
  • Top 2 fellows receive full-time paid employment offers at month 6
  • Open to candidates in WAT · EAT · EST · BST · IST timezones

Application

Deadline: 29 May 2026. Applications reviewed first come, first served.
