Our company, Hogrefe Digital Solutions GmbH, develops the Hogrefe Test System (HTS), a web platform for comprehensive psychological online assessments, and employs more than 60 people. Our test procedures help, for example, to diagnose learning difficulties in children at an early stage, they are used in HR for aptitude diagnostics, or by psychological professionals to support people with mental illnesses on their path to recovery.

Role

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager (m/f/d) full-time to lead our software engineering teams. The position can also be filled part-time. You will play a crucial role, driving both technical excellence and product delivery. Utilize your skills and experience to take our platform to the next level.

Responsibilities

  • You will hire new engineering talent, support their development, and create an open, collaborative, and high-performing environment where everyone can reach their full potential.
  • You will coach and mentor software engineers in their development, fostering a culture of learning, ownership, and pride in good work.
  • You will shape the technical direction of our products, setting high standards for quality, scalability, and speed of implementation.
  • You will take responsibility for the software your team develops, ensuring its robustness, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • You will promote modern engineering practices such as Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, and the code review process.
  • You will work closely with Product Managers to understand business requirements, assess technical feasibility, and prioritize backlog items.
  • You will act as a liaison between your team and stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and effective collaboration across disciplines.
  • You will work closely with the Head of Software Engineering and other Engineering Managers to establish a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • You will provide guidance on architecture and design issues, challenging existing approaches to find the best solutions.
  • You will motivate your team to contribute new ideas, drive innovation, and develop best practices.

Requirements

  • More than four years of demonstrable leadership experience in managing software development teams, including recruiting, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Hands-on experience as a software engineer, with strong knowledge of Java and/or other modern frontend web technologies.
  • A strong track record of successfully delivering software projects, with a balanced focus on technical excellence and on-time delivery.
  • Solid understanding of software development methodologies such as Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD.
  • You possess strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities, enjoy taking responsibility, and are comfortable in ambiguous situations.
  • You are a team player with excellent communication skills.
  • You are fluent in both written and spoken German and English.
  • Experience with in-house development and coordinating with external or outsourced partners is a plus.

Requirements

  • Mehr als vier Jahre nachweisbare Führungserfahrung in der Leitung von Softwareentwicklungsteams – inklusive Recruiting, Mentoring und Performance Management
  • Praktische Erfahrung als Software Engineer sowie sehr gute Kenntnisse in Java und/oder weiteren modernen Frontend-Webtechnologien

  • Du arbeitest eng mit Product Managern zusammen, um Geschäftsanforderungen zu verstehen, technische Machbarkeit zu bewerten und Backlog-Items zu priorisieren
