Software Engineering Summer Intern
AVIAN LLC
About the role
Your mission
At AVIAN, our mission is clear: we stop fires before they start. Our infrared camera systems and AI-driven monitoring help industrial companies detect abnormal heat early, prevent fire risk, protect assets, and avoid costly downtime.
We have reached product-market fit. We have the product, the proof, and strong customer demand. Now we need to scale the technology behind it.
As Software Engineering Summer Intern, your mission is to help build and improve the software systems that power AVIAN’s fire prevention platform. You will work with the engineering team on real product features, internal tools, data workflows, customer-facing improvements, and infrastructure that supports our path to $10M+ ARR.
This is not a passive internship. You will ship real work used by the team and, where appropriate, by customers.
You will:
• Build and improve features across AVIAN’s software platform. • Support backend services for data ingestion, alerting, device communication, event history, and customer workflows. • Help improve internal tools used by engineering, operations, support, and customer-facing teams. • Work on dashboards, APIs, automation, data pipelines, or integrations depending on your skills and project needs. • Debug issues across software, devices, cloud systems, and customer environments. • Write clean, maintainable code with tests and documentation where needed. • Support engineering quality through code reviews, better tooling, and clearer workflows. • Work closely with software, hardware, AI, product, and operations teams. • Turn real product and customer needs into practical technical solutions. • Bring curiosity, speed, and ownership to engineering projects.
This is a hands-on role. You will code, test, debug, document, and ship useful work every week.
Your profile
You are a curious and pragmatic engineering student at a Swiss university who wants to build real products. You care about clean code, reliable systems, and learning quickly from strong engineers.
Must-haves:
• Currently studying a degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, data science, robotics, or a related technical field at a Swiss university. • Strong programming fundamentals. • Experience building software projects beyond coursework. • Ability to write clean, readable, and maintainable code. • Basic understanding of APIs, databases, cloud services, or web applications. • Strong debugging skills and willingness to dig into unfamiliar systems. • Comfort working with ambiguity and asking clear questions. • Ability to learn quickly and take feedback well. • High ownership, direct communication, and bias for action. • Fluent English. • Ability to work on-site in Zurich during the internship.
Nice-to-haves:
• Experience with backend development, frontend development, cloud infrastructure, data pipelines, or DevOps. • Experience with Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Go, or similar languages. • Experience with cameras, sensors, embedded systems, edge devices, or IoT. • Experience with AI-enabled products, computer vision, data processing, or monitoring systems. • Experience contributing to open-source projects, technical side projects, hackathons, or shipped tools. • Interest in industrial IoT, fire prevention, predictive maintenance, machine vision, automation, safety tech, or hardware-enabled SaaS.
Why us?
AVIAN is building a new category in industrial fire prevention. Our product protects real facilities, real assets, and real people. The impact is immediate, measurable, and operationally critical.
You will join at the right stage: product-market fit is proven, customer demand is real, and the technology now needs to scale. This is the opportunity to learn how a real-world engineering team builds software across hardware, AI, cloud systems, and industrial operations.
What we offer:
• On-site experience with the AVIAN team in Zurich. • Direct collaboration with the engineering team. • Real ownership of software engineering projects. • Opportunity to ship code that supports a mission-critical product. • Practical learning across software, hardware, AI, data, and industrial IoT. • Competitive internship compensation. • High-trust working environment with clear feedback. • International team with a clear mission and strong customer focus. • Opportunity to contribute to AVIAN’s path to $10M+ ARR.
The AVIAN Way:
• Clarity, ownership, speed. Everyone owns outcomes end-to-end. • Fail fast, fix faster. We learn quickly and improve continuously. • Radical transparency. Shared knowledge, open decisions, constant feedback. • Global and focused. International team, customer-obsessed, real-world impact.
AVIAN is an equal-opportunity employer. We welcome applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request.
About Us
Early Fire Prevention. Predictive Power.
AVIAN’s Swiss-engineered computer vision algorithms provide mission-critical protection for high-risk industries - wood, recycling, paper, and beyond - by spotting process anomalies before they escalate. Our AI-driven system has already stopped thousands of fires and downtime hours in real operations, saving facilities from catastrophic loss.
With the world’s largest dataset of real fire events, AVIAN delivers unmatched accuracy, instant alerts (SMS, WhatsApp, phone), and PLC-based automatic shutdowns. Beyond fire safety, our predictive maintenance analytics extend equipment lifetime, reduce downtime, and keep your facility insurable.
