Software Test Engineer – AOI Systems

Job Description:

The Software Test Engineer – AOI Systems is highly detail-oriented professional to join our R&D department and support the validation of software releases for our AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) systems.

The role is critical to ensuring that each release is stable, reliable, and aligned with the expected performance before it is installed on customer machines. This position contributes directly to product quality and to the success of the entire R&D team

This role is based at our headquarters in Mendrisio. The ideal candidate will bring a patient, organized, and problem-solving approach to their work and must have prior experience in a similar field.

Key Responsibilities:

Manual Testing & Validation

• Execute structured manual test procedures on AOI/SPI machines for every new software build or release.
• Perform functional, regression, integration, and usability tests in accordance with defined acceptance criteria.
• Validate improvements, bug fixes, and new features through hands-on testing on real machines.
• Verify compatibility between software versions, machine configurations, and hardware setups.

Bug Reporting & Documentation

• Accurately document all test results and anomalies.
• Report every issue, defect, or unexpected behaviour directly in Jira, following internal R&D workflows.
• Provide detailed reproduction steps, logs, images, screenshots, or videos to support developers during analysis.
• Track the status of reported issues and verify fixes in subsequent releases.

System Setup & Configuration

• Prepare AOI/SPI machines for testing, including installing builds, configuring recipes, loading data sets, and verifying calibration.
• Maintain structured and consistent test environments within the R&D lab.
• Collaborate with robotics, optics, and software teams to ensure correct machine configuration before testing.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with Software Developers, Product Owners, and Application Engineers.
• Provide continuous feedback on system usability, workflow efficiency, and potential improvement areas.
• Participate in internal release reviews and support go/no-go decisions.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Technical Diploma or Degree in electronics, mechatronics, computer science, or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience in manual testing, preferably with industrial machinery or automation systems.
• Knowledge of:
  • optical inspection principles
  • SMT/THT processes
  • image processing concepts
• Excellent attention to detail, precision, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to follow structured procedures and produce clear documentation.
• Proficiency in test methodologies and familiarity with defect tracking systems such as Jira.
• Ability to work hands-on with lab equipment and real hardware.
• Fluent Italian and English

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with AOI or SPI systems.
• Familiarity with Linux-based environments.
• Understanding of machine vision or industrial automation.
• Knowledge of scripting languages (Python) for minor automation tasks.
