Senior Staff Backend Engineer

About the Role

The Senior Staff Software Engineer will serve as the go-to hands-on coder and architect across the CARDS technology platform. This is a pure IC role with no people management responsibilities, focused on building high-quality, observable, production code quickly and safely in a cloud-native stack.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Apollo GraphQL subgraphs.
• Build event-driven services using Kafka/SQS.
• Architect platform-level solutions for resilience and scalability.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and operations teams.
• Contribute to efforts around onboarding, credit bureau reporting, and servicing and collections APIs.

Requirements

Must Haves:

• 8 years building distributed backend services
• 3 years TypeScript/Node.js in production
• Apollo GraphQL / Federation / subgraphs
• AWS (EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, KMS, IAM)
• Kafka/MSK or SQS event streaming
• Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform
• TDD, CI/CD, feature flags
• OAuth2/OIDC (Okta), IAM, encryption
• Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or related field

Nice to Haves:

• Fintech/lending/credit card platform experience
• OpenTelemetry Grafana/Datadog/New Relic observability
• NestJS framework experience
• Strangler fig/shadow migration pattern experience
• Safe migration patterns (shadow/parallel modes)
• Credit bureau or collections API experience
