The Opportunity

Join the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL/RI) in Rome, NY as an SSO Security Assistant, supporting the Special Security Officer in managing and safeguarding Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI). In this role, you will provide both technical and administrative support within a dynamic SCI environment, ensuring secure operations, compliance, and smooth day-to-day coordination of security programs. Candidates must be able to obtain a Top-Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.

Responsibilities

Information Security (INFOSEC):

  • Serve as a front-line support point by receiving calls, greeting visitors, and directing inquiries appropriately.
  • Assist with safeguarding and storing classified materials, working papers, meeting materials, and other sensitive documentation.
  • Support electronic scanning, formatting, and storage of documents.
  • Use office automation tools to create, edit, and manage forms, memos, reports, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Manage and maintain records in accordance with Air Force and OPM requirements, including receipt, control, logging, and safekeeping of classified materials.
  • Update and retrieve information from required systems such as DISS, NISS, and EDA.

Personnel Security (PERSEC):

  • Assist with SCI personnel security processing, including indoctrinations, debriefings, foreign travel/contact reporting, and visit coordination.
  • Manage visitor requests and scheduling for meetings, conferences, and briefings.
  • Enter, update, and maintain personnel security data in systems including DISS, RMT, and Scattered Castles.
  • Support electronic transmission and receipt of documents using USAF tools and DoD SAFE.

Industrial Security (INDUSEC):

  • Assist with reviewing and managing DD254 security agreements for SCIF operations, ensuring proper contract language for prime and subcontract DD254s.
  • Process SCIF Co-Utilization Agreements (CUA) and Joint Utilization Agreements (JUA) and maintain associated records.
  • Support SCIF accreditation and reaccreditation processes, including database updates, incident entry, facility package preparation, and annual self-assessments.
  • Consolidate data for recurring security reports in accordance with established guidelines.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain TS/SCI security clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

  • Ability to interact professionally with visitors, government personnel, and security staff.

Desired:

  • Experience supporting security functions (INFOSEC, PERSEC, INDUSEC, or SCIF operations).
  • Working knowledge of security systems such as DISS, NISS, RMT, EDA, and Scattered Castles.
  • Prior exposure to classified materials handling or SCI facility operations.
  • Comfort with reviewing government forms (e.g., DD254) and maintaining official records.
