Staff IT Engineer
Ashby
About the role
About Ashby
Ashby is growing rapidly, and we're looking for talented individuals to join our team. This role is crucial for scaling our IT support and infrastructure.
The Role
This is a pivotal technical role within the IT team, which will grow into a larger team as we scale. You will be directly assisting Ashby employees while also working on backend systems and API integrations. We are looking for someone comfortable with both direct support and technical development, who can innovate and provide technical excellence in the IT/Client Engineering space. Empathy and strong communication skills are essential for providing excellent support.
Responsibilities
- Own and resolve customer issues from initial report to final resolution, including one-time fixes and large-scale technical projects.
- Advocate for and implement best practices for a secure and productive IT function.
- Lead projects in device management, identity management, hardware logistics, and user lifecycle management to automate processes.
- Contribute to building a scalable, event-driven backend for seamless data shifting across the business.
Requirements
- A strong belief in the importance of end-user support as part of engineering.
- Deep experience and architectural understanding across IT systems like device management and identity management.
- Demonstrated experience automating interactions between IT systems and other internal systems using APIs and glue-code.
- Comfort and interest in building a stateless internal backend with Typescript services, pub/sub queues, and APIs.
- Desire to work in and help build a small, efficient team.
- Ambition to challenge norms and build for scale and flexibility.
- Humility and empathy in interactions with others.
Non-Requirements
- Experience in our exact tech stack is not required; systems knowledge is prioritized.
- A specific timezone is not required, though US timezones are preferred. We are remote-friendly and can hire across Europe, the UK, and the US. Visa sponsorship is available.
What You'll Be Working On
- Assisting end-users with everyday issues and implementing structural, lasting fixes.
- Leading the development of an internal backend for scalable data and business logic management.
- Using Terraform and Git to manage critical systems (device management, IAM).
- Defining and implementing authentication rules and role-based access control.
- Tackling people-data challenges related to access control.
What You'll Not Be Working On
- Break/fix cycles without addressing root causes.
- Non-stop ticket handling; contributions to both interrupt-driven and systemic issues are expected.
- Traditional corporate IT; we use a startup stack with cloud-based systems and a focus on macOS devices.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and equity.
- 10-year exercise window for stock options.
- Twelve weeks of fully paid family leave (US, with plans to expand).
- Generous budget for equipment, software, and office furniture.
- $100/month education budget, with manager approval for more expensive items.
- Top-notch health insurance for you and your dependents (US), with all premiums covered.
Equal Opportunity
Ashby provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce.
