As a Tax Manager, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and managing engagements, ensuring that all work is completed with accuracy, timely delivery, and a high standard of quality. In addition to providing exceptional client service, you will also focus on talent development through mentoring and coaching.
This position emphasizes expertise in State and Local Tax (SALT) with insights into Government Contracting (GovCon). The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in multistate tax matters, making SALT proficiency crucial for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Expertise (Core SALT)
- Display thorough knowledge in multistate tax regulations, including nexus, apportionment, and compliance requirements.
- Keep abreast of changes in state tax laws and relevant legislation.
- Pinpoint potential risks, audit exposures, and planning opportunities.
- Utilize strong research and analytical skills to tackle complex tax questions.
- Translate intricate SALT concepts into clear, actionable advice.
- Develop a solid understanding of tax accounting principles and familiarization with the Internal Revenue Code and other relevant technical guidance.
- Demonstrate effective research and communication skills to help clients comply with regulations and solve complex issues.
- Share insights with YHB colleagues on updates in standards, laws, and regulations.
- Continue to specialize in specific tax areas.
- Refine skills in reviewing workpapers and tax returns.
- Identify and propose solutions to problems, applying strong analytical techniques.
Client Advisory and Impact
- Act as a trusted advisor, anticipating client needs and proactively delivering solutions.
- Understand the broader financial and operational impacts of SALT on clients.
- Balance technical accuracy with practical business implications.
- Foster and maintain strong client relationships through reliable communication.
- Ensure prompt and high-quality service to clients.
- Handle complex discussions with confidence and tact.
- Adapt communication of tax concepts to various audiences.

People Leadership and Development
- Exemplify firm leadership and meet the requirements of the Circle Manager role.
- Mentor and coach Supervisors, Senior Associates, and Associates to develop their careers.
- Provide constructive feedback and set clear performance expectations for team members.
- Conduct evaluations and create development plans to guide career progression.
- Empower team members through effective delegation and by providing necessary resources.
- Address performance challenges directly while fostering a culture of inclusion and collaboration.
Business Development and Productivity
- Adhere to time reporting policies and strive to meet billable hour expectations while ensuring quality work.
- Recognize the importance of networking and cultivate professional relationships through industry involvement.
- Identify and pursue business development opportunities aligned with client needs.
- Contribute to firm growth by participating in events and assisting with proposals.
Continuous Learning and Professional Development

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.
- An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years in public accounting or equivalent professional experience is essential.
- Strong SALT experience is required; experience in a multistate context is preferred.
- High integrity and respect for confidentiality are essential.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and people management skills are needed.
- Excellent communication, time management, and organizational capabilities are crucial.
- Willingness to travel to YHB offices, client sites, and training events is expected.
