About the role
About Steampunk
Steampunk is the explosive collision of human-centered design and traditional government contracting. We are an employee-owned company with a startup mindset and time-tested approaches tailored for the federal government. We're passionate about creating solutions that are impactful, practical, and scalable while meeting our clients' ever-changing needs. We believe in empowering our people to find creative solutions to intractable problems. We believe the best environment in which to grow and thrive is outside our comfort zone. We believe that while good design makes for a good product, human-centered design makes for an excellent one.
Your Role
As a Steampunk UI/UX Designer, you will be responsible for developing intuitive and user-friendly designs, wireframes, and technical interfaces to bring technical solutions to life. You will drive adoptability and usability of the systems we develop and will employ design techniques that always put the user's perspective first in the solution.
Your day-to-day work will include acting as the lead designer for a variety of projects, creating clear web and digital experiences for primarily government clients. You'll work closely with both external clients and internal, cross-functional teams on projects that range from a few weeks to a few months in length. Communication with government stakeholders and decision-makers is central to this role—you'll present your ideas in compelling ways using a variety of visual mediums.
What We're Looking For
You'll need a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design or a related field. We're seeking someone with up to one year of experience delivering interface design solutions for various clients, including highly detailed annotated wireframes and user flows within complex web or mobile applications.
Hands-on experience with Adobe Creative Suite is essential, as is proficiency with rapid prototyping tools like Axure or Balsamiq. Strong client communication skills are non-negotiable—you'll be interfacing directly with government stakeholders. You should have a proven track record developing rapid prototypes and producing wireframes for user interfaces. Additionally, you must have the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance.
Nice-to-Have Experience
If you have previous work experience in or with the federal government, that's a plus. Experience working within an Agile environment on a cross-functional team would be valuable. We also appreciate the ability to synthesize complicated information into digestible infographics, data visualizations, operational and workflow diagrams, and roadmaps. Any background working on branding and/or marketing/communications projects rounds out an excellent candidate profile.
Compensation and Location
Steampunk relies on several factors to determine salary, including but not limited to geographic location, contractual requirements, education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. The projected compensation range for this position is $75,000 to $140,000 annually. This represents a typical annual salary range for this position. Annual salary is just one aspect of Steampunk's total compensation package for employees.
This position is located in our Mc. Lean, Virginia office at 1753 Pinnacle Drive, Suite 900, Mc. Lean, VA 22102. As part of the application process, you are expected to be on camera during interviews and assessments. We reserve the right to take your picture to verify your identity and prevent fraud.
