Lexful
About the role
About Lexful
Build the Future of KnowledgeOps.
At Lexful, we aren’t just building a tool; we are redefining how the Managed Service Provider (MSP) industry operates. For decades, IT documentation has been static, fragmented, and manual—becoming an operational risk rather than an asset. We are changing that.
As the creators of the industry’s first AI-native IT documentation platform, Lexful turns "stale" data into real-time contextual intelligence. Our mission is to move MSPs away from legacy storage and toward a modern "KnowledgeOps" ecosystem. Through our intelligent assistant, "Ask Lex," we empower thousands of technicians to stop hunting for information and start solving complex problems instantly.
Joining Lexful means joining a team of industry veterans and innovators backed by Top Down Ventures. We are a security-first, product-led company dedicated to eliminating "tribal knowledge" and building the autonomous infrastructure of the future. If you are passionate about AI, automation, and making a massive impact on a global industry, you’ll find a home here.
About the Role.
As VP of Engineering, you will own both the strategic and technical dimensions of our engineering organization.
On the leadership side, you'll develop and execute our technology roadmap, hire and mentor a high-performing, senior engineering team, and serve as the primary technical partner to Product, leadership, and key stakeholders. You'll bring structure and clarity to how we prioritize, plan, and deliver. While on the technical side, you're building alongside the team — in the architecture discussions, the hard technical calls, the moments where something breaks and someone needs to own it. 'Hands-on' here means your fingerprints are on the system, not just the roadmap.
We're an early-stage company, which means the environment is dynamic and the scope of your impact is broad. You'll be building processes alongside product, navigating real ambiguity, and making decisions that will shape the company for years to come.
Responsibilities.
- Technology Leadership & Detail Orientation: Lead the creation and execution of comprehensive technology and innovation roadmaps while maintaining a deep, hands-on understanding of the technologies and needs driving our core products. You should be comfortable delving into architecture, code reviews, and technical problem-solving as needed.
- Engineering Management: Manage engineering teams, ensuring they have the resources, tools, and processes needed to succeed. Provide clear direction on engineering best practices while staying deeply involved in day-to-day technical decisions to maintain the highest level of quality and performance.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product Management and other stakeholders to translate product vision into actionable technical requirements. Ensure alignment between product strategy and technical execution by actively participating in technical discussions and decision-making.
- Hands-on Technical Oversight: Be deeply involved in technology stack decisions, system architecture design, and critical technical implementations. You must be able to roll up their sleeves and engage with the engineering team to tackle complex technical challenges.
- Risk & Performance Management: Identify potential technical risks and proactively address them. Implement robust monitoring and quality assurance practices, ensuring technical issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.
- Mentorship & Development: Serve as a technical mentor, helping team members grow their skills and technical acumen. Foster a collaborative, innovative engineering culture that encourages knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
- Scalability & Optimization: Focus on building scalable, robust solutions that meet both current and future business needs. Ensure that systems and applications are optimized for performance and maintainability.
- Stakeholder Communication: Act as a technical liaison between engineering teams and key stakeholders. Provide clear, detailed updates on project status, technical challenges, and overall system health.
- Multi-team Coordination: Oversee and coordinate the work of multiple development teams, ensuring seamless collaboration, work prioritization and efficient task allocation, and alignment with project milestones.
Qualifications.
- 8–12+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3–5 years in a senior technical leadership role
- Equal comfort operating as a people leader and a hands-on engineer; this is a 50/50 role and both halves matter
- Prior startup or early-stage experience strongly preferred; thrives in ambiguity and moves fast without breaking things
- Deep proficiency in at least one primary backend and/or frontend language/framework, with the ability to contribute production-level code and conduct meaningful code reviews
- Strong command of system architecture, distributed systems, and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS preferred)
- Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, data engineering, SRE, and security practices — enough to partner credibly with specialists
- Experience hiring, managing, and mentoring engineering teams, including managing managers
- Proven ability to translate product vision into technical roadmaps and communicate trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- High ownership mentality, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a pragmatic bias toward action
- Actively use AI tools as part of your daily development workflow — for tasks like code generation, debugging, refactoring, and design exploration. You reach for tools like Cursor or Claude Code.
