Position Overview
The API Platform Engineer / API Developer designs, builds, and operates APIs on the central enterprise API platform. This role acts as the technical owner of APIs from initial design through publication, migration, and full lifecycle management.
The position focuses on delivering stable, reusable, and consumer friendly API contracts while ensuring quality, security, and long term maintainability. The engineer works closely with product owners, platform teams, and consumers to standardize API practices and migrate legacy integrations onto the central API platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement REST APIs aligned with enterprise standards and contract first principles
- Own API lifecycle management including design, development, gateway publication, versioning, and deprecation
- Act as technical owner for APIs from initial concept through production operation and retirement
- Migrate existing and legacy APIs to the central API platform while maintaining stability and backward compatibility
- Implement API gateway configurations including routing, policies, authentication, and authorization
- Ensure API quality through consistent error handling, resiliency patterns, and performance considerations
- Produce clear API documentation and support a strong developer experience for internal and external consumers
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in distributed API based systems
- Collaborate with DevOps and platform engineers on CI CD, APIOps, and environment strategies
- Partner with security and identity teams to implement access models and protection mechanisms
Technical Environment
- API Design: REST, OpenAPI, Swagger, contract first approaches
- API Platform: Enterprise API management and gateway platforms
- Integration: Backend services, legacy systems, and cloud based workloads
- Versioning and Lifecycle: Backward compatibility, deprecation strategies, migration patterns
- Security: Authentication, authorization, access control, API policies
- Operations: Monitoring, logging, troubleshooting distributed systems
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
- Approximately three to five years of hands on experience in API development or platform engineering
- Strong experience designing and implementing REST APIs using industry standards
- Hands on experience with API gateways and API management platforms
- Solid understanding of API versioning, lifecycle management, and migration strategies
- Experience integrating APIs with backend services and distributed systems
- Knowledge of error handling, resiliency, and stability patterns in API design
- Ability to debug and troubleshoot complex integration issues
- Strong collaboration skills and comfort working with cross functional teams
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
- Experience with APIOps and automated API deployment pipelines
- Familiarity with cloud native integration patterns
- Experience supporting enterprise scale or regulated environments
- Exposure to API consumer enablement and developer portals

Salary Range
$100,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on technical proficiency and years of relevant experience.
