Associate Director – Engineering (Payments Integrations & Scalable Systems)

Location: Gurgaon ( WFO)

Role Overview:

We are looking for a strong engineering leader to drive payments integrations and high-scale

platform development. This role will own the architecture and execution of payment gateway

integrations, partner ecosystems, and scalable transaction systems, ensuring reliability,

performance, and compliance.

The ideal candidate will have deep experience in integrating with banks, networks, and

payment partners, along with building distributed systems capable of handling high

transaction volumes.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Payments Integrations (Core Focus)

● Lead integrations with:

○ Banks, NBFCs, and payment partners

○ Payment networks (UPI, cards, wallets)

○ Gateways and aggregators

● Own end-to-end lifecycle of partner integrations (onboarding → certification → go-live →

optimization)

● Ensure seamless handling of APIs, webhooks, retries, and failure scenarios

● Drive faster partner onboarding and integration scalability

2. Scalable Systems & Architecture

● Design and build high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems

● Handle large-scale transaction processing (high TPS systems)

● Ensure idempotency, fault tolerance, and data consistency across systems

● Optimize systems for performance, availability, and scalability

3. Payments Flow & Platform Ownership

● Own critical payment flows including:

○ Authorization, capture, refunds

○ Settlement triggers and reconciliation hooks

● Build systems for real-time transaction monitoring and alerting

● Improve success rates, latency, and system reliability

4. Engineering Leadership

● Lead and mentor teams of backend and platform engineers

● Drive code quality, system design standards, and best practices

● Collaborate with product and business teams to align on roadmap and delivery

5. Compliance & Risk

● Ensure adherence to PCI-DSS, RBI guidelines, and security standards

● Work with risk and compliance teams on fraud prevention and transaction

monitoring

6. Cross-functional Collaboration

● Partner with Product, Business, Operations, and Finance teams

● Work closely with external partners (banks, networks) for integration and issue

resolution

Requirements:

● 10–14 years of engineering experience, with strong exposure to payments / fintech

systems

● Proven experience in payments integrations (banks, gateways, UPI, cards, wallets)

● Strong expertise in building scalable distributed systems

● Hands-on experience with:

○ Backend technologies (Java / Kotlin / Go / similar)

○ APIs, microservices architecture, event-driven systems

● Strong understanding of:

○ Payment flows and transaction lifecycle

○ High availability and fault-tolerant system design

● Experience leading teams of 8–15 engineers

● Excellent stakeholder management and problem-solving skills

Good to Have:

● Experience in merchant acquiring / payment gateway platforms

● Exposure to settlement, reconciliation, or ledger systems

● Understanding of UPI ecosystem and NPCI integrations
